this may be the wrong time of year to think about this but does any one know of an ice fishing clinic to help teach newbies and if not perhaps we should organise one, as im sure your all aware if we dont bring new blood into our sport it will die

There has been some inquires about doing an ice fishing clinic this season and I was wondering if there is any interest out there for such a thing?

Currently looking at a kids/adult event in Kearney February 5 & 6, 2011.

Classroom instruction Feb 5, 4:30-5:30 pm for kids clinic. Adult class 6:00 - 8:00 Yanney Park building.

Feb 6, 8:00 am - noon. Informal ice fishing gathering.
Yanney Park - pan fish and bass.
Cottonmill - pan fish and pike.

Free kids clinic. Minimum charge for adults or free will donation depending on amount of participants and cost of renting Yanney Park building. Any proceeds above and beyond that would be donated to nefga/recycled fish.

Topics will include:

Safety
Regulations and etiquette
Stewardship
Equipment and usage
Multiple species ice tactics
Ice fishing destinations
Enjoyment of the sport

At this time there are 7 instructors/support that would volunteer their time for this event. I hope to add someone from Nebraska G&P if we get enough interest.

Thanks,

Don Cox

Awesome pj.
I've been looking forward to meeting you for sometime.

Reserving the building this week so it's a go.

What topics would you like to see covered at this event?

Good deal!!
Depending on the way things are going I might make it to Boji in Jan for the tourney as well.  Wouldn't want Mike to make the journey all that way by himself for "saftey" reasons.  ::)

Right off the top of my head:
  - Since the clinic is in Feb. How important finesse fishing is  "Downsizing" & "Upsizing" kinda go hand in hand with that.  Being able to reconize on you're electronics of how fish react to a bait & matching the correct sized jig accordingly.  I don't think it can be stressed enough, especially when I see guys, on a regualr basis, fishing for gills & crappies with huge jigs in the middle of the ice season.

  - Plastics, there's still plenty of people who don't have confidence in them.  Possibly go into detail on which ones to use during a paticualr time of the ice season.  A "Match the Hatch" look at plastics.

I realize that topics like this may be a little advanced, suppose it depends on the type of audience that is attracted to the clinic as well.

If you need any help, shoot me a PM.

Thank you for the help offers. Sunday will not be a structured event due to liability issues. We will be ice fishing two lakes in the Kearney area  and anyone can join us at their own risk. With that said, all assistance with newbies on ice is more than welcome.

Mission statement for this clinic is for every person attending, whether it be a beginner or seasoned ice angler, leave the building with advanced knowledge of the sport and a new/renewed excitement for ice fishing experiences.

Not necessary, but I wouldn't mind having a rough attendance idea for seating. Post on here or send me a pm.

List of speakers posted soon.

Just some info for those of you not entering in the Maskenthine tournament and are not out on the ice anyway:

Southeast Community College is holding an ice fishing class at the York middle school on 1/29 10AM-noon.  Looks like they will be covering all the basics for fishing, safety, and techniques for rescuing someone who has fallen through the ice.  Then from 1PM - 4PM you will construct three ice fishing rods, will take you out on the ice to fish, and learn how to fillet fish (that you hopefully will have caught).

Not sure if you can find this info online anywhere but you can get a Winter 2011 Continuing education schedule from any of the campuses (Lincoln, Milford, Columbus, Norfolk, Beatrice..... am I missing any?)

Sounds like a very good class JAM3S.

Just wanted to hear somemore input on this event. I'm taking my son & daughter.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Ken Frankhauser will be doing most of the youth class. Without a doubt, the kids will enjoy it. Ken is very animated.
Ice safety is first and foremost at any age but especially children.
Don't know his exact format. Expect some of the basics like attaching bait, jigging technique, proper rod and jig placement after use.
Have some give away goodies for the kids. I'll apologize right now for any stickers that end up in unwanted places.

I'm still frustrated that I can't make it to this.  This event would have been perfect for my son and I.  My son was interested in going too.

Oh well....sometimes work gets in the way of fun.

Thanks for the offer.  But, I have to be out of town starting on Thursday of that week for about a week.  A week in Vegas.

I would rather be on a frozen lake with my son.  Or, at least with sitting around with you guys talking about it.
