Them along with long handeled pliers are the best tools you can have for pike fishing. I woulnd suggest buying a pair.

You want to make your own?  Wire clothes hanger.  Just prop it into the mouth.  I've just bought my first jaw spreader.  I'm thinking...better than the clothes hanger.  ;D

I agree;  You could get both for about 5-6$   Most sporting good stores carry em'

When a Pike doesn't wanna open it's mouth, it's not easy to get it to.

I follow the old Ranger motto...

Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

Dicks has them, go with the short ones.  The long ones would seem better but it allows the pike to have more leverage and will spit them out more often.  Definately a must for pike fishing if you value your fingers.

Anybody who has gotten a bite from one of the pike family on the ice knows how bad it can bleed . This happens because pike have an anticoagulant (keeps blood from clotting) in their mouth and on their teeth ,and can make for a nasty long bleed. Use a spreader ?  :-\

Both very valid points.

I've just seen a lot of pictures of pike with spreaders and they look so incapicated it seems like over kill to me.  Only once have I ever been chomped down on by a pike and needed assistance, but even then it was my fault because I was too stupid to go get my tools and tried to open its mouth by hand and reach in. (FYI, if one ever does get you - do not pull your fingers/hand out. Wait for someone to come open the fishes mouth for you.)

Biased I am though. I carry a pair of heavy duty medical hemostats and in addition one of the guys I am usually fishing with wears thick leather gloves and he peels pikes mouthes apart like bananas.

I guess as long as you don't spread a fish under say 8lbs where the hook isn't accessable with at least a $5 pair of hook removers I'm okay with them.
