Anyone ever ice fish The Slang?
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 07:36 AM »
We (along with the rest of the dang state!) duck hunt the Slang in the fall and as we sit in the blind there are huge splashes of fish jumping. Have had every intention of boat fishing it sometime but have not gotten to it. Wondered if anyone ice fishes out there.

Never icefished it, but have dragged lines through the water on the way in from duck hunting.  Got into pike and bass on swimbaits and the like.  Saw a dude pull up a bowfin from the bridge.  Can only imagine there are perch, crappie, and bluegill in there too.  Been meaning to run down and give it a try.  Maybe this winter.  If I do, I'll post on this thread.  How bout you do same if you go?  After last summer, should 6-10 FOW, I would think (?)

Never icefished there, but I do plenty of bowfishing there in the spring and summer. These things make a big splash when they jump outta the water.
Damn it......dropped another minnow!

What the hell is that? That thing is huge! Do you eat that?

When I am sitting in the blind, waiting for first light I hear these splashes that sound like someone threw a concrete block in the water, I bet that thing is one of the culprits!

Carl, thats a carp....they are considered rough fish in Vermont and maybe shot with a bow. However, on light tackle they are very sporty. Out in the great lakes and some southern states people even flyfish for them. One of the local guides at streamandbrook guide service offers carp fishing on Champlain.

Aha! Thanks for the info, that thing would be a riot on light tackle I'm sure!

I use a canoe with floats and a trolling motor. Some day I'd like to have a boat like you probably thought I had, just to be able to go out at night. I've been on nice bowfishing boats before, but I can't afford one. It's a lot of fun. When you get a nice sunny day during the spawn, it's unreal!

If you ever want to try bowfishing let me know when the ice is out I go out at night with lights and a generator. Lots of big carp and gar by the sandbar.
