what to do with used 1# propane cans
« on: Jan 31, 2010, 10:23 PM »
Hey guys, I have pile of used propane cans (have of them are mine, the other half I picked up off the ice from others who left them behind :-\ )  and I'm not sure what to do with them.  I'm sure they need to be recycled, but are you supposed to take them somewhere or can you put them out with the other recyclables?  Thanks guys, keep em tight!

I agree on both statements as it is an economical way to use the one pound cans, but I am sure it is going to set of a barrage of comments on the safety hazards of refilling. I have refilled them for years and feel safe and comfortable with the practice.

Might be able to re-fill 100s even 1000s without a problem.  Not for me though.  Can be quite dangerous.

It is an adapter that allows refilling from a 20 pound tank. I got mine from Cabela's, but I am not sure they sell it any more. Amazon.Com sells them and they run right around $20. It use the simple principal of cooling off the one pound containers in the freezer and then attaching in to the bulk tank while upside down. This causes the warm liquid in the bulk tank to tranfer to the cold empty container. When the pressure equalizes the one pound container is full.

Target practice for your rifles.  Make sure they are aways away and you pick up after yourself, then throw them away.  Don't they still have a bit of pressure in them even though they are empty?  Any way that is what I would do.  Jsut be careful what ever you do. >:D

I've heard of recycling places taking them.
I throw mine in the trash, as they take it to a burn plant, which sorts it. If they are charging me $2 a 30gal bag they can deal with them.

Until the day they miss one and someone gets seriously injured.  :nono:

OK now follow along on this:

First  put the little white cap back on it.

Take it home.

Find some very nice and bright wrapping paper.

Wrap it up and then mail it to one of your friends at Christmas time.

Use a fake return address so they don't know you sent it to them.

Works like a charm :P

Send it postage due to show them you really care...

im a big fan of the adapter.ive been refilling them for years now.the only thing i do each time is to put a bit of wd40 on the tops of the cylinders.keeps them from rusting.if they start to rust,chuckem.......back to that part

Remember that cylinders are steel. Certain areas do not recycle steel. The safe and proper way of disposal of cylinders is to use a green key.http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=3000000415&categoryid=27400&brand=

Make the return address the actual address where you want it mailed to and then mail it with no postage at all.  It gets returned to sender for postage due.  Whalah!  No cost mailing!
