I only use tire chains on the rear tires. It seems to be adequate so long that the snow is so deep that you bottom out.
I own a Grizzly 660 and only use rear chains. I was stuck in some pretty sticky slush once last year and wasn't lucky like SeaMonster and could be close to shore, But, I have a remedy for that. Cut a 48" length of pressure treated 4x4 and put it in your sled, when you get stuck, drill a hole just short of the length of the winch cable. Put the 4x4 in the hole 2/3 of the way in, wrap the cable around the 4x4 at the closest point to the ice and winch yourself out. if you find yourself still stuck, just repeat the process until your out to flat ice again. Hope this helps!!--KP
I use 3/8" sheetmetal screws and it makes a big difference especially on bare ice.
