38 inch - 22 pound Pike on 2 lb. line
« on: Jan 18, 2010, 09:38 PM »
My dad caught this pike today on Castle Rock, which is in Wisconsin.  He was using a Med-Light action rod, 2 lb. test, and an Okuma reel.  The key to getting this hog in was the drag.  It took at least 10 different runs, and the drag worked everytime.  The best part of the whole day was seeing my son get so excited when he saw the pike come through the hole.  The moments today will last for a very long time.

nice pike yes but i second the scale recalibration
as these were my two personall best  and they were both pretty chunky

44" 23lb northern thru 8" hole 6 lb line no leader
38" 14lb northern thru 8" hole 6 lb line no leader

this is the 38 14 lb

and this is a 44  23 lb

sorry to burst your bubble
but still nice fish on 2 lb line

We used an old fish scale that we bought many years ago from wal-mart, and the reading was just under 22 pounds.  We only fish for panfish, so when we seen the weight we just figured it was right.  I would have to agree with you pike experts, that the fish is more around the fifteen lb. range, based on your personal catches.  Regardless of the weight, I don't think this fish will be beat anytime soon in our family.

P.S.- Would have to say that there is probably a few nice panfish in his gut that we were trying to catch that day!!!!!

As many have stated the scale was not correct but that is a nice fish no matter what the facts are that fish being caught on 2 lb test is unbelivable.  Good for you all and the best part is you were all together.  Be sure to document this day and have plenty of pictures copied as you will be talking about  this as the good old days some day when you are the grandpa and your sone is the dad, even when your son is the granpa many many years from know.

always good to see the kids out on the ice

Impressive catch! Even more impressive than the two pound line is the fact that it was on a small jig if you were pan fishing, am i right?

Hey Kramdog, thats a beauty of a pike on two lb line. I used to fish Castle rock all the time back in the 70s and early eighties. We lived about 10 miles from there. I live in northern new york now but I really miss the fishing out there. Do you guys still get big Crappie out of Castle rock? We used get 17 inchers out of there on a regular basis.

Oldbuck- yes there are still some very nice crappies in this lake.  17 inchers aren't that common, but 12-14 inch range is common.  I do know some guys that have caught some 16 and 17 inchers.

My dad caught this pike on a small SUPER DUPER JIG tipped with a waxworm. We were fishing for crappie and white bass which are very plentiful in this lake.  Any thing with flash will attract these white bass, and when they come you can catch hundreds of them.  We were try to get some for my son.
