It looks to me like they somehow 'herded' all the fish into an area and trapped them with that 'stick' like fence you see behind them and now they are netting them like you would out of a hatchery.  Not sure how the herding would be done unless it was done in open water and then the fish were trapped until ice over.

I know one thing...I have never been on fish so thick you can net them and they don't even try to avoid the net.  Something 'fishy' going on there!!

Looks like a large under ice minnow trap! Takes the fun out of it! Maybe this is their job and they are commercial fisherman. Wild video though!

looks to me like its a river and they put that wood "fence" up before it froze.  the fish must have some sort of migration or something up river and theyve got em trapped.  boy, and to think that i thought some of the lakes i go to are over fished.  i guess thats one way to fill the freezer lol

I'm guessing they are natives and have subsistence permits.  It's common in Alaska for the native villages to have subsistence permits to be able to harvest large populations of fish & game, outside of "normal" seasons and limits.  They've probably been doing this for 100+ years and is part of their culture.  Just speaking from my experience living in Alaska and that's my guess.

The shovel was overkill. There gonna freeze anyway. Had to be some kind of trap. Fish would make me sick if I seen that many on the ice.

The fishing style is used in the nile river and the far east, very effective.  On the rivers the fisherman stand on shelf's built above the traps and spear the fish as they enter.  Hours are spent watching their traps for that night's dinner.
