anyone trap any shiners in the last week?
« on: Jan 12, 2010, 06:31 PM »
i'm curious if any of you trappers out there have had any luck in the last week or so?  i've got a pond aways behind my house that i trapped a ton of shiners out of in the summer, and then 300+ in mid december (first ice) in two soakings of four traps.  i just ran out on saturday and threw the four back in on sunday w/ the same cat food i used in december.  checked all four on monday morning - nothing.  reset w/ new/fresh cat food and checked monday night, nothing.  reset w/ bread and got one shiner.  just went back tonight and had one shiner in one of the four traps.

i can see a few shiners swimming around after i cut the holes!  i don't understand why they won't take the bait.  the pond is loaded w/ them!

anyone get any in the last week?

i reset them again tonight w/ some different stinky cat treats.  if there's nothing in the AM i'm trying another pond i did well in over the summer.

it's the same thing as dry cat food isn't it?  dry cat food worked 3.5 weeks ago...but not now...

Somtimes a slight change is the diffrence between failure and sucess. Now put the damn dog food in the trap and get your bait.

As water temperature get down to 34 to 36 degrees the shiners metabolism slows right down and they eat very little.
