hotdogs????
« on: Dec 28, 2009, 09:01 PM »
ok guys I went through all 15 pages so I wouldn't have to ask this embarrassing question but I overheard people sayin they use hotdogs on their hooks or lures. Anybody want to comment on this. (after you get done laughing of course) and if you have used it what fish does it work best on?

hey I gotta ask why else do you think they call me Soup
good things come to those who wait......Im still waiting!!!

I have tried them on Burbot and yes they do work. Then again smelly chicken liver works with Burbot.

My great gram showed me how to fish with hot dogs on a pocket fisherman when I was a kid. We used to pound the bullhead and cats on them. I too have seen people posting here about pike hitting them but as you said I'm still trying to figure out if that is a joke.

During open water I've had bluegills go after hot dogs- but bluegills around here go after everything. Also caught creek chub on hotdogs. Sometimes I'd bait a minnow trap with hotdogs and catch crayfish- crayfish love hotdogs.

I haven't used hot dogs since I was a kid.  Always worked well for catfish.  And my cousin and I ran out of bait once and discovered that bluegills love orange bubble gum.  Chew it up and just tear off a little piece and put it on the hook.   :icefish:

When I was a kid, buddy and I were fishing and started a small campfire to cook hotdogs on...just for kicks i put a hunk of dog on and when I checked my rod later low and behold there was about a 15 inch pike on.  Spring time...not icefishing.  I would still recommend chubs however. ;D

All kinds of good jokes on this thread but I can personally vouch for them working really well on bullhead n cats. One less thing to carry also. Bait and grub is in the same bag.

I've actually seen people use hot dogs as bait on quick strike rigs and catch some really nice pike on them.  More than once.

Fishing for porgy (scup) in Long Island Sound some years ago. After running out of squid strips, I began dipping into one of my ham sandwiches when the bite was real hot.

Ham doesn't stay on the hook anything like squid does, but I was still catching!

Whatever works!

In the past I have used hot dogs while ice fishing and have found that pike will strike them. :)
They might be a good thing to try when none of the other baits produce for you.

I like to cut the hot dogs in half so the scent is released a bit better.
I then rig it on a single treble hook right in the middle and suspend it a foot or so off the bottom.

Garlic sausage can work also. ;)

I might have to try the hot dogs or even some little smokies. One for the fish one for me one for the fish one for me. Sounds like it would work great.  :icefish:

A guy I work with uses Johnsonville Stadium Brats. (they are pre-cooked)

He cuts 'em in half length wise,  and puts them on his tip ups.

He says the oil / grease that comes out of the brats is what attracts the pike he catches.

He does catch some real Hawgs.   The upside is if the fish aren't biting, you can always cook up the brats and eat.
