1 lb propane tanks leaking?
« on: Dec 25, 2009, 07:39 PM »
i have 1 lb tank in the back of my truck for the heater in my shack i didnt use it all so i put i in the box with the heater and put it in the bed, well this morning i opened my topper door and the whole bed had a hint of propane in the air, is it normal for the tanks to leak a little bit?

I have also had that happen on many occasions.  I finally decided to leave the pounders hooked up until they are gone, even if I would rather be using the bulk tank.  At least that way I get it used up rather than wasting it into the air, or worse yet, creating a safety issue where it is leaking into an enclosed space.

If anyone has a sure-fire way to get them to not leak after taking them off partially used, I'd like to hear how you do it.

other non-coleman tanks have an inferior valve, and when it is cold out it doesn't seal.  I usually tap the tanks lightly with a hammer, that usually will make the valve seal.  or put em in the cab to heat them up on your drive home, and it should seal on its own when you get home.

Do a rally quick press and release of the little valve in the center of the tank, that usually works.

Pray u don't ever strike a spark with ur hammer buddy. :o ::) all 1lbers have a tendency to leak that is y the refill adaptors r illegal in canada. Leave the tank attached or switch to a hose and 5lber. And I wouldn't want to be driving with a leaking propane tank in my cab. Just my 2cents.

I use these also. They are a little hard to get on when your fingers are cold though. Best to leave the tank hooked up until you get home, bring it inside to warm up then take the tank off and cap it.

I find I have the same problem when it's really cold.  On days in the 20's or more, I haven't had a problem.  Below that I get a lot of tanks theat won't seal.

the cold temps make the rubbr gasket on the tank firm and the you add the frost from actually using the propane tank, and the valve doesn't seal completly. If I have my tanks in the warm shack after use ten disconnect it usually seals..

If it is cold enough there then the propane tank can go into a vacum and actually suck in air at -39C liquid propane will pour like water
