We fish Split Rock in the open water - but always use lures.  Are there any bait shops near there?

Unless there is one on Rt. 23 near the North end of Greenpond Rd (Rt. 513) the closest one I know is Dover Sport (Rt. 23 isn't that close either except closer as the crow flies). That's about a 1/2 hr. ride from Split Rock. Nothing much is close to Split Rock except woods!!! Beautiful and pristine though and likely why it stays some what clean. Unfortunately, there are some who still throw their trash in the woods . Sad but true. I would suggest getting your bait the day before travelling there.

I agree also with State Park too...primarily because its an area that is easy to fish!!! Pretty much the same depth in all areas. I think that should be the number one criteria in choosing a spot. Deep water lakes are fine and all but if you dont have electronics you are pretty much fishing blind even with a map.
Its also another place thats within decent walking distance to wherever a weight/length station would be.

There is a bait shop there: Garden State Bow and Reel It is about 1/4 mile north of the intersection od RT23 and Holland Mountain Road. I think about a mile north of Green Pond Road.

Split rock is off Green Pond Road in Hibernia

Not sure how to give directions to it but know how to get there. I'm sure some one will give better directions than I can. If no one does, PM me and I'll get you there, using land marks.

Gents,

Go to the New Jersey Reports and Conditions section of the NJ ice shanty forum and on page 1 of the Split Rock Res/Morris thread, January 6th I posted directions from Rt. 80 along with a trail map from Wildcat Ridge (showing roads, Reservoir and trails). You can manipulate the map if you want....N, S, E or W plus zoom features. That should help to get you there. Hope this helps.

4inch_ok,

That's a 10-15 minute ride from Split Rock and may be a good option for those travelling from Rt. 23 to Rt. 513 S (Green pond Rd) to the Reservoir via Upper Hibernia and Split Rock Rd.

Split Rock is near Big Boulder ski area in Pennsylvania - if that's the Split Rock that you're talking about.  The lake there is beautiful and I've only fished it in the summer.  But if that's the one that you're looking for it's all good.

I've been communicating back and forth with Reb and it's not looking good for central Jersey lakes. Reb had said that there was safe ice but he's talking 4"-6" and with the warm spell this week it's not looking good.
We need to make a choice shortly so we can give adequate notice to every one. We'll make a decision this weekend and I'll post it on Monday.

No I have to check other derby's dates so we are not conflicting. I know many members enter other derby's as well.  ;)
As of now Jan. 30th or Jan. 31st might be good.
Some good news though .. I already have a few sponsors.  ;D

I think Hopatcong and north are the best bets. We have 5-6" of ice in the central/southern parts of the state but thats not enough for the derby and as Doug said this little warm burst and rain may kill what we have down here.
Doug and Shawn=== Please try to pick a lake and a day, where and when the fish are in a cooperative mood..No Pressure of course!!!   Lmao

Okay ... Saturday January 30th and it will be Swartswood depending on ice conditions  .. we will be checking. Swartswood was chosen to again try a different body of water and for it's wide variety of species : Panfish, Catfish, Pickerel, LM/SM Bass, Brown/Rainbow/Brook Trout, Walleye.

If for any reason the ice isn't safe we'll reschedule for February and or a different lake.

I'll place a main post once I have everything in place.
