Gillette Area Ponds
« on: Dec 02, 2009, 06:43 PM »
Drove down to the city fishing lake today and there was only 1" of ice.  Hoping there will be a few more inches by saturday so I can test out the gear and maybe even catch a fish.
So many fish, so little time.

Does anyone know of some farm ponds that hold stocked fish like bass, perch, catfish, bullheads, trout? Somewhere in N.E. Wyoming?  Preferably close to Gillette. I've seen a few on spotted horse road but haven't been able to find any information or maps of local bodies of water.

Go to the end of 4J Rd west of Gillette, don,t go under the interstate. Turn right on Alpine Ln and stay on it til it heads south. Stay heading south and you,ll find a small pond on your left. Bows are in there.

Is the pond on Alpine open to the public? I thought it was private. I've asked a few people and no one would say who could give permission.

Also pound around Weston on the Grasslands. One has bass the outher is stocked with trout. Several pounds around Upton and Osage that have panfish and trout.

Thanks Appleye-

Those walleyes in on your page from KH?  Is there much of a town up there at Weston? I was just wondering so I could maybe call a local baitshop or hardware store to make sure I fish the one with bass.

I'm going to head up to the Weston Bass pond on Sunday....Now it's just a matter of finding it. I know it's on the east side of HWY 59, on an unmarked  forest service 2track. If I can't find that one I guess it's pretty easy to find the trout pond.

No town at Weston, just mail boxes now. If you go to the intersection of Heald and Hwy 59. Once there, go about 1/3 to 1/2 mile. Theres a two track that goes east. Take the road and stay to the right. The road ends at the pond. There is some inflow around the cattails. The pound is not deep but some nice bass.

Sorry, both eyes from Keyhole. Both are 11lbs. Didn't take the little ones (9s) picture. Fall 08. Didn't do as well this fall. 5 over 10lbs and a bunch of 8s and 9s. Spent to much time hunting.

I fished today what I beleived to be the Weston Bass ponds. The shallow pond that once had bass looks to be only  2-3 feet deep in any one spot and the color of Chocolate milk. I would guess that it's been winterkilled. After checking out the ice I dropped the vex down. Didn't mark any fish then I packed up and drove a little ways back to the 1st pond I passed with cattails. Water was fairly clear, Depth of this pond was 12-14 ft. in the center, ice was 3" thick close to shore but more like 2" in the center. (Kept the shack near the shoreline).  I marked 2 fish between 11-1:45 PM  and had 2 super light bites from what I guess to be tiny perch.(set the hook and nuthin')  I never did get either one of the 2 larger fish to hit my lure. 1st time on the ice this year looking forward to KH getting enough Ice.
So many fish, so little time.

Note to Self:

The little buddy heater does not create enough heat for my Eskimo Quick Flip 3. (4-person shack, comfortably fits 3). I'm taking it back and getting a sunflower style, they keep the shack much more comfy.
