favorite lures or jigs
« on: Nov 11, 2009, 06:05 PM »
i thought it would be interesting and educational to find out different fishing styles, not asking for deep  dark secrets just wandered what is your go to lures.  at this time my go to gill setup is a number 10 flourescent gill pill, i love these jigs. second would be a northland spoon with two or three spikes on it these spoons look hugh but i can tell u i have caught five inch gills on them so maybe there no to big.  my last resort is a number 12 or 14 dot black jig with a 16 inch piece of line on the end with a plain number 12 hook with a mousie. fish on

my go to bait is a 4 or 5mm fiska jig or #12 little atom optic stealth jig with a white maki or mousi from makiplastics  and next would be same jigs with 3 or 4 spikes on

I love to use my own handmade teardrops for pannies, jigging raps for walleyes, and genz worms for perch

I'll give up my deep dark secret but...you can't tell anyone else...K. ;) My go to is a Sukkula Hali. I tie a 2# test dropper rig off the lil chain and use a micro jig or size 12 plain hook on the dropper. I like to tip the Hali hook with one mousie or spike, then put a small minnow on top of the mousie. This way if my minnow gets stripped, that hook isn't down there baitless. The dropper I tip with just a couple mousies. This setup has outproduced anything else I have ever tried. I have to credit the great Dave Genz though. The setup is prone to tangles but I can deal with it for the amount of fish it has caught me.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

I just realized this thread is in another state, so check your regs before trying this stuff. The Northland Forage Minnow jig I use as my back up. When possible put the heaviest jig on the bottom of any dropper setup (less tangles). I always tip the biggest hook with a mousie/spike and a minnow on top of it. Droppers are the way to go for me.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

i've been looking all over around here for stuff to make your jigs....can't find hooks or lead wire...just wondering if you sell them, as it gives you more of an opportunity to feed your addiction. (i understand, i've been making bass lures for about 15 years...even got a couple touring pros using them.

The slurple jigs are way to expensive, they won't even list them in the catalogs there so good.
They were trying to ban them because they worked so well. Wish I had some- ;)

bait and hook on winchester rd. in ft.wayne sells lead wrap and mustad hooks with horizontal or vertical eyes in a lot of different sizes and they also have a great selection for making your own flies. and by the way i am not doing promotions for anyone just have been able to find everything i need there. good luck this year and hope this helps

GillGetter, do you use the same lead wrapping like you would tie a fly for flyfishing? What size hooks? Size 14 too small?

I believe it is a Jigginstick original.  A few of us have done some knockoffs.  I looked at one, did some research, found what I thought were the parts he was using and he confirmed.  I made up about a hundred of 'em in different colors, but they are not as nice as his are.

I use an #10 eagle claw hook in gold, solder won't stick to nickle hooks. I get the blades from Jan's Netcraft then use a 50/50 solder with plenty of flux. If you don't use flux you won't get the nice rounded shape. Also It helps to get a piece of aluminum bar stock and a dremel tool with a real small bur and make a pocket that matches the blade. That way when your soldering it will help hold it in place. I use a pair of hemostats to hold the hook at just the right angle while I'm soldering. If you get 1 in 3 to come out like you want your doing pretty good its time consuming and flustraiting at times. I then powder coat them and bake them at 350 deg. for 20 minutes to harden the paint. So when unhooking fish the pliers don't chip them as bad. And as for the answer as whether I sell them, no I don't. They take to much time to make. I would have to charge to much to make it worth my time. But if you see me out on the ice I might turn you on to a couple. LOL

thanks a ton for the info jiggenstick, all i can say is you must be very patient they look fabulous, i have seen the magazine from jans netcraft so maybe i"ll do some shopping. really thanks again they  look amazing you are very tallented, it must take a ton of time to fabricate these jigs but it would be very rewarding to have succes with a jig you made.  how long did it take u to design them.  they look awesome. really appreciate the insight.  fish on :) :)
