I pretty much use a 6" for everything mainly because I do it by hand. I have a 10" gas auger that I'll probably be looking to get rid of, but only used it 2 or 3 times when the ice was over 20" thick. I ordered an Icegator this year so I'll probably pick up an 8" to add to my collection. I've got some pretty large fish through a 6" hole so I would say it is a very good universal size for just about anything , only a couple times have I had to drill an adjoining hole to get a large fish through it.

I would use a 9” if I could find one but seems they don`t make them anymore. So I use 10” when it`s cold and your holes are shrinking all day or in March when the water starts running into your holes and making them grow, I swap to 8”. Anything smaller and my oversized reels would rub if I weren`t careful. Powered style.

I also have a Mora 8” hand auger that only gets used early in the season when ice is thin or if I go to a remote pond where there`s a 2 trap limit and I`m trying to save weight hauling it in.

I have a 6" Lazer hand auger and an 8" Lazer Mag power auger.  I use the 6" here in Indiana where we don't see ice hit a foot most of the time and the 8" when I go to Michigan.  I like the extra couple of inches and am considering going to a 7" or 8" hand auger and selling the 6".

I have a 10" Jiffy STX Pro. 3rd year with it.
I prefer the 10" size especially when there's a chance of hooking into a pike while fishing for walleyes.
An 8" inch hole tends to downsize to a 7" or smaller by midday. Where as the 10" ends up being a 9" hole.

I have an oldschool 1977 Eskimo 3hp w/ an 8" Bit- I`m a dragger so I`m planning on picking up a 6" handauger to cut weight early and late in the season. I gutta feeling we are gonna be using our extensions this year as little snow is predicted, along with record low temps which means thick ice. Was pretty close last year at a few of my spots to pullin the extension out.

I bought a 6" drill for my Jiffy stealth a few years ago and havn't had my 9" drill on since. I can get a decent size fish through a 6" hole or drill a cluster. Much less cumbersome to deal with the 6" and faster to drill.

I'm sporting an 8" Finbore (hand). I had a 10" gas but it seemed like over kill. I like a good sized hole when I'm jigging with my flasher in the hole. Even an 8" I guess isn't really NEEDED to land a big fish but, it sure makes life a little more easy.

All i have to use is an old school 7.5" hand auger. It works well when the blades are sharp, but in 15+ inches you don't drill a whole lot of holes :flex:

I use a 6'' Lazer hand most of the time, though I sometimes use the 5'' for pans when the ice gets thicker, usually over a foot. Now that I have an Icegator it will likely be the six all season. If I had to buy a power auger it would be an 8''.
