Ice Fishing Superstitions.
« on: Oct 28, 2009, 07:40 PM »
Do you guys have any weird superstitions involved with your fishing? I am not an irrational person and I have a few. I just want to make sure I am not alone. ;D

I spit in the first hole of the day, and always throw the first fish back. I also always sit on the right hand seat in my Voyager.

Am I nuts?

Weird...  I always sit on the right side of the shack as well.  Always put out the American Flag on the shack...  Even if it gets really noisy from the wind.  Try not to spit my bacco juice down the ice hole.  Always have my ice picks!!!  I will try to put the first fish back...  what if its a lunker!!!

Well just as a general fishing rule "don't talk about fish that haven't been caught yet!"  My friend and I were trolling for salmon on lake Ontario 2 summers ago and he had a fish on a dipsy bigger than any other fish hes ever had on his boat and he said "Oh yeah!  This one's going on the wall!"  Suddenly the fish ran out 900' and "snap!"  I just turned around and said "Should of kept your mouth shut!  ;D

I am extremely superstitious when I'm icefishing. I wear the exact same clothes whenever I am icefishing. Not just kissing the admin's butt but part of my outfit is my IS hoodie and skullcap. I have a certain pair of woolies, banana boxers, long johns. I have a t-shirt that says "I cut the cheese in Wisconsin!" It was never a problem until I burned a week of vaca to fish last winter and fished nine days in a row. I slayed them each day and was disgusting by the end of it. I've wanted to upgarde my tipup's to Heritage Lakers for years too but just can't do it. I broke a tipup from my original set last year and it almost brought me to tears. It still sits in my basket and will be on the ice with me this year as well. That particular tipup caught more fish than all the rest. You're not alone at all Skipper. Good thread to get going for sure. I'd write the rest of my superstitions but pry lost many half way through this post. I could go on for a while.

Somehow the banana on the boat superstition of open water has crept into my icefishing.  I refuse to bring a banana on the ice with me.  I also will not eat a banana the day or morning before heading to fish because then it will still be in my stomach when I go.

Somehow the banana thing got extended to all tropical fruit.  Something seemed unnatural about eating pineapple in the middle of winter on a frozen lake and I decided that was unlucky too.

Who knows, this year I might decide that all fruit and vegetables is unlucky when ice fishing...then I'll be stuck eating meat and potatoes all winter.  But if I catch fish its worth it, hahaha.

Maybe not for ice fishing but one salmon trip the guide threw coins at the rods and he told us he was paying the fish gods.  Seamed to have worked because we caught the most fish out of the 30+ other guides out there that day! ;D

More ritual than superstition.

When I go out in the morning I set up my trap and just sit quietly for a few minutes. Take in the cold air, listen to the ice (it talks, you know) and let the calm of fishing wash over me.

Then I smile and start rippin' perch! ;D

when the tip-ups don't produce, just take out something to eat, or open a beer. the flags will go up then.

i go out alone at least once, just for the peace and quiet.

If I were always falling through...I think I would take the hint and probably quit.  But losing 96 lbs is another great approach!  Congrats on that!!  It is a huge accomplishment!

First fish goes back in the hole.
I always sit on the right hand side of my shanty.
When my buddy is with me we celebrate every fish caught with a cheers and a drink of whatever we are drinking. (coffee or beer)
I put a pinch of my cigarette tobacco in the first hole I drill. (for the fish gods)

My buddy will not use my flasher. He says its bad luck and does not need it when he has a Fish Finder Joe2000. That's me ( I always seem to put him on fish) and the model number changes with the seasons year, 2010 this year.
