Wall Tent Capacity
« on: Jul 23, 2009, 11:47 AM »
I'm asking this question here because there are some pro's to camping in the winter on here!

I was thinking about purchasing a wall tent....I need one big enough to hold at least 4 guys and obviously a small stove.

Would and 18X23 be overkill or do you think that would be about the right size?  I like the idea of just using the canvas tent idea....but I'm not sure we could fit 4 guys/gear/stove in a canvas tent.

Thoughts?

Big is nice. Mostly depends on how far you have to carry it. If you can drive to your spot, go with the big one.

I have a 12 X 14 big horn 2 tent ( has a floor)
It is big enough for 3 with a stove table and cots
I bought a cam-o-cot set up that stacks into bunk beds
so I can sleep 4 and stove
the size tent you are going with will have enough room
are you going to camp on the ice or ground ( are you going to ice fish out of it)
is this for summer, fall or winter trip

you could also look at kifaru for the tipis
made of sil nylon very lite and takes a stove also pricey
I have a 4 man from titanium goat
going to get an 8 man from kafaru soon (for 2 people)

It will be for winter and will need to hold 4-5 with a stove....having a little room to move would be nice....so you're not stepping on one another.

When a stove advertises that it burns for 10-12 hours....how accurate is that?

I also forgot to add it will probably not be used for ice fishing......we'll be more than likely be camping on the ice......it all depends I guess.

If you are using propain heater the times will be about right
For a wood stove the size of the stove and air tightness maters
I use a small stove that lasts about 1/2 hour
and my Yukon military stove lastes about 4 hours if stoked in the big tent
wood in at 12AM more in at 4 AM and 8 am
An old yukon will also run on fuel oil with the attachment
got mine on e-bay.

Most of the time I dont worry about the fire at night
I have -20 sleeping bags I just start it in the morning
makes for a better nights sleep. no getting up

If you get an air tight stove you could do better
some people burn coal I have not tried this yet I hear it smells a bit

I was just looking at cabelas and they just came out with a Montana Lodge wall tent.  It puts the wood stove in the middle for central heat.  Put the cots around the edge of the tent and you're in business.  Anyone else taken a gander at these new tents?  They are not cheap that's for sure...but if you have 4-5 guys go in on one...should be okay.  I'm guessing they are a LOT lighter than older wall tents.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Ive herd some good things about the alaknak. One guy up here had one and camps lots in the snow season. Very lite on weight for the size of them. He had the 12X20. Wood heat is better than propane for keeping things dry.
