Should they make Ice Fishing an Olympic Sport?
« on: Mar 18, 2009, 12:59 PM »
How do you think the USA would do in a world wide competion? It would need to be at a site in the home counrty. Maybe a day each at several lakes with a total tonage at the end.

too much luck involved.

But if for some reason it did happen (it wont, but just saying) the US should enter in only 5 year olds to this competition, they always win derbies.

No, I hesitate to call it a sport at all. Sometimes it just seems that its tough to find a good word to describe it.

That or a hobby...

I fish hard, but I wouldn't call it a sport.  Like the person above said, there is a signifigant amount of luck involved... I don't care if your Jimmy Houston or PeeWee Herman, you can set up on the best spot on the lake and if the fish aren't there -they aren't there.

Id say obsession is the best way to describe fishing...at least for me. Fishing of any nature is not just a past time, hobby or event for me...its a way of life...I absolutely love to fish. I would also like to see it in the olympics, although i think it would be tough to make it feasable. As far as luck is concerned, i think that is complete hog wash. Theres a reason some guys are at the top of the tournament trail consistantly...and the reason anit luck!!!

Bingo, I was talking about this 10 years ago. There could be events related to both skill and luck. Please tell me what you think of the following events

1.) Supply the contestants with identical hand augers, and have medals for fastest 1 hole, 5 hole, and 15 hole drilling times, similar to track and field where there are sprinting and long distance running events. Remember Eric Heiden in 1980? SWEEP them all.

2.) Fastest person to 20 fish, any size, with 5 tip-ups, in a pickerel infested pond. Cool thing here would be to have your tip-up flags be miniature versions of that of your country. This could be a combination of both luck and skill since it takes skill to quickly reset a tip-up to catch another fish on it, and some luck to be over the right spot.

Pure luck contests do not belong in the Olympics, but are best left to us recreational fishermen. It is no accident that I proposed Olympic events that I would win gold medals in every time.

Wouldn't it take some of the attention away from intense sports like curling? ;D

Hunting, fishing and trapping are true sports.  It is always sudden death overtime. No need to keep score, either you win or you lose.  The rest are just games. Some are just sillier than others.

Make it an olympic sport. Send them to the Antartic. Might take alot of physical stamina to survive the extremes. It would narrow down the candidate field given the conditions.

Yeah, you could have stock and modified catagories.
The modifieds could be setup like those Hot Saws in the lumber jack competitions.
See how fast you could drill and 8" hole with a hopped up 125 cc dirt bike engine!!!!  ;D

#1 Three mile (5K) snow shoe/xcountry ski for lake access.

#2 All hand auger holes

#3 No electronics or GPS

#4 Jigging only

#5 Ten minute limit each on seven different lake areas or species zones.

#6 One fish limit on each zone (like biathalon - move when fish iced)

#7 Race of 2K to final area

#8 Final area has fillet arena

#9 Fillet all of catch

#10 Time deduction for species and lbs of fillets

What do you think?  ;)

Jimmyclaude, I like most of your event details , but your race distances are too long, have you seen the average fisherman out on the ice? Also, you got to have tip-ups in this, that would make for a real TV friendly broadcast - the running to a flag.

I like the fillet contest, I never thought of that. The hand auger sprint and endurance events that I want are absolute must-haves in my opinion. Glad you posted your ideas about this. We are all getting a little crazy now that ice-out is already here or very near.

fuller ... The ice fishing world championships are just jigging and this is for an Olympic type event. Now if ya had a nascar style event ... that the motor heads would have to do the input.....
Still would need some sort of course. instead of "zones" it would have to be lake to lake over greater distance.
