Another Wildlife Sighting.... Wow
« on: Mar 10, 2009, 03:17 PM »
Today I was fishing the open water of Stump Pond in front of the police station when all of a sudden a bald eagle comes flying in being chased by 10 or so seagulls.

He perched up in a tree and I ran to the car for my camera. I took some pictures from in front of the police station and then hopped in the car and went and took some more from the boat ramp area.  I was amazed.  I knew there was some near the reservoir but I've never heard of one being around here in Smithfield before.   It's the first time I've ever seen one in person.

22 Views and no response? Wow you guys are cruel.

Just in case you guys don't believe me. Here is a picture that isn't cropped and you can see the police station parking lot and also the road that goes up to the condos in the background.

(Sorry I posted the same picture twice in the first post, was supposed to be two different ones.)

Nope, no fish.  But then again I only fished for about 10 mins. before he showed up... about 10 mins.in between taking pictures (he was perched in that tree for almost a half hour) and then I packed it up so I could go take pictures from the boat ramp.

I was literally right in front of the police station so I had no structure to cast at, so I was throwing a big 8inch shad swim bait and a medium sized daredevel.  I'm sure if I fished a little longer I would have gotten at least a whack though.

Thanks James, and yes they sure do!

Like I said, I was fishing and saw about 10 'gulls swarming a bird. I said, "Wow thats a big bird they are chasing." Then he flew in my direction and I said "Holy sh** thats an eagle". I don't think I've ever even seen one in a zoo before and it was still 100% unmistakeable.

Nice pic EAD. Just sent a PM to big Ed about the bald eagle sighting, saw two of them last night circling the house at tree top height as I was putting out the trash. Very impressive...be cool to see one swoop down and pick a 10 lbr. out of the lake. Then I could say I got outfished by a bird this year  Did Billy ever show you the video of our last day of hard water fishing on the Stump, when the ice was bending as we walked, pretty cool. Also nice pics of the gang hanging out at the cabin, closing out the season with a few (lots) of beverages.
