This year we really lucked out with the ice conditions. A week before the gathering was getting real iffy that it would happen. I like having this the last saturday in Feb. but the ice is not a garrauntee down here. After this years great turn out I would like to have more time to coordinate next years as this years only really came together in the last two weeks with prizes and all.

So would everyone be willing to attend if I set next years Gathering at Higgins? Once again a smelt trip but with a whole lot better odds of good ice.

It would still be "The 3rd Annual Gathering".

What do you guys think? Higgins next year? or not?

I will give it a couple months before I decide just want everyones input. Thanks.

I guess either would be fine seeing as how I missed out on this year!! Although I think higgins would be easier for me to find..Is this a smelt fishing trip only? or just a get together with some fun prizes included? Here is an idea to chew on what about having it the during the free fishing weekend? Mid- Feb ice could be better....with prizes possible on both days? Just some thoughts I'm sure you have many already.

Her's a little info for you. The free fishing weekend is booked for me. I take my son to the grass lake kids fishing derby. And next years drawings will have a donation to get a ticket and all proceeds will be used to sponsor a "Teach a Kid to Fish Day" in the Summer of 2010(Oh great. Something else to organize

). More info on all of this will be posted in the fall.

Im with vex. you name the place day and time and i will be there. If it is at higgins though we could meet at houghton early morning for some gills and pike and then move the gang over to higgins for smelt at night. Might as well make it an all day event so if people cant make it out at night maybe they could in the morning for a little bit. give people more of a chance to meet each other.

With enough alcohol i think we could have just as much fun in a big mud puddle as we could anylake!! At least if we're fishin a puddle we aint gotta worry about drowning or slippin on the ice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking maybe out from Big Creek or B&B.......I fish the south side for Perch all the time and I wounder if the smelt would be just as good down there because if so then the Iceshanty crew could have the whole South boat launch to it's self

I was thinking another spot. But I will be anywhere you guys want to go. I am starting to learn that lake like the back of my hand. I will help mud if you want get things running if you decide to do it up here.

I will go anywhere there's a place two or so miiles from the west boat ramp also not that far from the north state park where the smelt are to.The place is called great escape lodge or motel.Good place to stay if you want to.I'v been going to higgins for about 6 years now for smelt.so i know a few different spots.there's lots of parking at both spots.maybe even on the ice done that a few times

also phenix party store has everything you need and only a mile away.
