I'd have to think that the ones packed in oil would give off a great scent trail....Problem is I'd be hard-pressed not to eat them myself  ;D I love sardines
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you on experience

We have used them in places where live bait is banned.  Works great.

Just don't get caught with them!   :o  We are heading up to Champ for an extended stay and they are VERY strict about using only vermont licensed bait (you have to sign and keep the slip on your person) from a vermont supplier. I was going to bring up some dead stinky pike shiners and was told by USFW to keep them home!  They have been having huge issues with foreign bait in the water and now restrict it to only vermont purchased bait. Also, any bait unused and not kept by you, MUST be placed on the ice for the birds and not thrown back in the hole!

I am also told that the game wardens are watching everyone's moves on this issue and are out in force!  That said, obviously do whatever you like... just be really careful!
