New White Perch State record
« on: Feb 12, 2009, 07:22 AM »
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine state fisheries biologists are declaring a new state record white perch.

The 3.02-pound fish was caught at Ellis Pond in Freedom on Dec. 19 by Jeff Paquette of Freedom.

The fish was weighed on certified scales about an hour after it was caught by Paul Flynn, the owner of Freedom General Store, and was witnessed by three other people. State inland fisheries biologists Bill Woodward and Scott Davis inspected the fish and confirmed the record.

The previous record was set on Feb. 9, 2002 by Michael Frechette of Sanford, who caught a 2.84-pound white perch on Square Pond.

Hey Mark, I just read that in the Sun Journal. I went to school with Jeff. He definitely knows his white perch. Good for him, landing the state record. I would love to see a pic also. I'd also like to know how long it was. Just curious.

Yeah they've been slacking on reports for the last year or so.  I used to look forward to reading them in the paper every sunday. Now we are lucky to get one per month. :-\

No problem Dennis. That makes two records in one year. Not bad.

Wow that is a monster! I know a pond nearby that is loaded with WP's and we use to catch big ones when I was a kid. (None like that though.) I'd sure like to have found that beauty.

Correction: That makes 3 records in one year. Steve Day from Madison broke the state record "Rainbow Trout" last year. 6.57 lbs, I believe.

I wouldn't get too discouraged about the posting of details of new state records on the web, GF. Most of the time, people will falsely give the name of the body of water just to keep their spot secret. Everyone will flock to the decoy water while people in the know continue to fish their water. Hell, Ive even seen on here, bodies of water to fish  that don't even exist, example: Little Trickey Pond, a must try pond for landlocked salmon. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can't always believe what you read on here. Don't get me wrong, there's still lots of good information being exchanged but not necessarily 100% accurate on where to go.

Right On - Like a 6 + lb rainbow from the upper andro!?  I have to believe that a good example!  (Wasn't that fish caught in '07?  I think I saw a picture and it was a beauty, whenever it was!)

That is a huge perch!  And thanks for the link to the picture...  Congrats to the new record holder!

FAKE!!! Thats not likey to be true at all. The state record was caught out of Messalonskee and it was 4 lbs 10 oz. That story isn't true i don't care if the wardens say it is the new record none of them were around in 1959. They need to look again. That is a huge fish though. Sabattus has a lot of white perch that are that size and just a little smaller but man are they fun to catch.

I looked at the pic,and was wondering where the deep black and silver is? That fish has brownish fins and dull sides? The big hump backs that i catch have a jet black back, and black fins.Maybe this is a regional thing?Nice fish though!

The lady who caught that fish was stripped of her title after she died! So the 'new' record stands! I believe her name was Mrs Earl Small. I have it in one of my older DeLorme Lakes and Ponds books.

Also the first thing I thought to myself when looking at Dwayne Rioux holding that fish was; it looks like it's only about a pound and a half. Also knowing Dwayne, I have my reserves.  Let's leave it to say he's a "true" fisherman. ::) I'll say no more...

i didn't know that the state could strip the record away from a deceased record holder for a smaller fish. that doesn't make much sense to me. if that's the case then anyone could look at the record list for maine and find out who's dead and take the record with a smaller fish. can't say as i agree with this.

Im thinking it was crossed up with a bass or something.I dont want to be negative, but my biggest was 16.75 inches caught in 1985,and it was definately bigger then the above fish.

well, i know the bios have to do test on the fish to certify a fish that is in contention for a state record. maybe it is the new state record, but i don't agree with the state strippin a long standing record because the record holder died.

yup. and it would prolly be a much smaller fish. they shouldn't strip records. people should have previous records to strive for.
