North, Grand Rapids area.  Other lakes are caribou, little bowstring, quite a bit from leech and winnie but that neck of the woods.
North of deer river about 20-30 miles

I use to fish it once in a while when i lived up there.  Great bass lake, decent walleye and muskie lake.  It's fished fairly heavily, and i like getting away from crowds.  I'd recommend several of the smaller lakes in the area over north star, there's about 100 lakes in a 15 minute drive.

Always wear clean underwear, cuz ya never know when the paramedics are gonna have to cut your pants off.

I don't really fish North Star when Im up there now either, just like you said plenty of smaller lakes.  It was so much more fun when I was a kid before Muskies were so sought after.  As far as ice fishing pressure though I saw no evidence of it last spring when I was up there.  I live in Montana so I can't speak for it now but saw nothing last year.
