Smitty Build ?
« on: Jan 03, 2019, 10:24 AM »
Those of you who have used 2x6 or 2x8,s as risers ,how long are you cutting them for your skies? I have 77 inch long skies was thinking mounting 24 inches from ski tip and 12 inches in from back of ski for better lift. Also treated wood vs non treated , which one ? Sometimes treated is still wet when you buy it. Thanks Don

Your asking a generic question.  The location of the risers is determined by the ice fishing hut that you are going to place on it.  Risers hold the cross pcs. and they should be as far apart as possible for your particular hut.

I made my riser blocks out of 2x6 non-treated since I had some around.  Built the sled for my FX-100 and placed the rear risers a distance of 9" from the back of the ski to the back of the riser block.  Front risers are 31" from the back of the ski to the back of the riser block which makes my crossmember slats that the sled sets on around 21 to 22" on center.

DO NOT use treated wood!!! You’ll be finding little slivers in you every time you touch that stuff.

I was asking how long each riser is lengthwise not for proper spacing .

Thanks Bucket Rump That helps , but how long did you make your blocks on your particular setup ?

Bottom of each riser that contacts the ski is 12" long - ski length I used is 65".

Don't think it matters much as long as you have a couple inches of wood on both sides of the crossmember.  I tapered mine from about 12" on the bottom to about 8" on top.    A buddy went from about 12" to 6" giving him about 1.5" on each side of the crossmember and ended up snapping off a piece at the top when he was disassembling it one day.  Pain in the butt just to save a couple of ounces.

I did 10" long 2x8 square no taper on top.  first block 1/4 way back on ski.  other one on back end, in couple inches.  I too lost a chunk off top when disassembling it.  not enough to matter though.  next one will get plywood glued and screwed on the sides at top, to prevent this. not making it so tight would help this too but I didn't want it to be sloppy.

Appreciate you guys getting back ! I have some left over glue laminate used for headers. Wonder how that would work ? There ought not be any breakage on top , but wonder how well screws would stay in on ski attachment . Would be screwing in between the laminates for the slats and ski attachment point

My risers are 12" long.
Front one is 23" from tip of ski.
Back riser is 12" from back of ski..

I broke off a chunk from the top of the riser on the first one I made.  Every one since, I drill down into the top and run a long screw vertically to reinforce that area and avoid the splitting along the grain there.........  Also, treated wood is inherently heavy and will rust normal hardware in short order.

What I did to keep the "ears" from breaking off at the notch was stapled and glued 1/4" ply to both sides of the riser before I cut the notch.  It added a wee bit more weight, but has held up well.

Same here but glued exterior OSB on both sides of the uprights.  Then 3 coats of spar urethane and you’re good for years.

My cross braces fit tight so I painted each one a different shade of paint.  (You can see the number 2 on the top of one of them, marking it.)  That way I knew I could easily tell which brace went where.  Ideally you shouldn't have to do this and they should be universal but I decided to leave mine tight and put them on the same way each time.

coldnose; you might want to check if that laminate is rated for outside use, or you could find it de-laming on the lake. good luck, wire

Guys,

Might want to check out this thread..

My build is pretty different, but solves some of the problems your mentioning. I've been really happy with it..
