New food ideas for 2014/2015 ice season?
« on: Nov 30, 2014, 08:27 AM »
Looking for some fresh ideas for this ice season?
We've done the standard stuff like chili, hot dogs, sausages, Mac/cheese, etc...
Anyone ever try reheating things like hot wings or loaded skins?
I know I can just give these a try in the garage, but I figured I would through it out here for fun first.
Figured they might be a nice change on Sundays while we listen to our beloved Lions out on the ice.
Anyone have any new ideas they are gonna try this year?

Reheating fryed food usually doesn't turn out to good, unless you have an oven and then it still isnt the same, we do a lot of cooking on the ice sometimes more cooking than fishing but on a slow day it keeps you busy, here's a few things we have cooked to give you a few ideas, sausage and peppers, beef and broccoli chicken stir fry, beef stew with dumplings, bbq chicken sandwiches, steak and cheese subs, if you fish with a lot of guys you could make wings on the ice with a turkey fryer but it can be a pain dealing with the oil, what I do is prep everything at home then all I have to do is throw it togeather, you can cook just about anything if you have a permanent shelter with a stove and oven I cook in a hub shack while fishing, good luck and enjoy the food sometimes its better than the fishing

Reheating wings, dirty bird, can be done.  Just use low heat on a cast iron frying pan on a coleman stove.

i'm going to try a simple Sheppard's Pie this year! Browned hamburger, creamed corn and topped off with mashed potatoes. I'll prepare it in individual serving tins to be reheated on my Mr. Heater on the ice.

Sheppard's pie in a medium sized tinfoil bread pan reheats great on the buddy heater.

Scotto-- Any type of casserole is great for shanty cooking... I've done lasagna, baked ziti, enchiladas, stuffed bell peppers... basically I'll try anything I can load into a disposable tinfoil pan at home and cook/heat up on the buddy heater in the bayrunner.

Welcome to the Shanty, Scotto! Lotsa good info around here...one that worked well for me, you can make it however you want, so I'm not going to post my recipe here...Chicken enchilada's, or use any meat...cooked chicken chunks, mix with chunky salsa, some cream of chicken soup, (undiluted) sour cream, shredded cheddar, chili powder, spices. Mix together well. Reserve some of this. Big spoonful in small (6") flour tortillas; roll up. Top tortillas with the reserved amount and more cheddar sprinkled on. Cover and bake for about an hour until nice and melty... :P

Convert that venison into sausage and you'll have to lock your shack door from the inside!

These all sound so good. The wife and I make our own soups and freeze them for the winter. They are great little meals out on the ice just bring the water to a boil toss in the pouch and presto.
A good day fishing inst complete unless it's spent with family or friends.

Bart - I have tried finding your Mr. Buddy heater conversion posts, but I can't seem to find it. You ordered a replacement heater grate directly from Mr. Buddy right? Could you possibly fill me in on the steps and what you did? I really like how clean yours looks and the functionality with the tins. Thanks man

Corn dogs cooked over the Mr. Heater with a forked stick. I got a telescoping forked stick from Menard's and keep it in my bucket. The breakfast corn dogs which are basically sausage wrapped in a pancake are ok, but take a while to cook thru. I've reheated fried chicken over the Mr. Heater. It's almost awful unless it is wrapped tightly in tin foil while being cooked. Then it doesn't dry out so bad and get chewy. I've reheated BBQed ribs wrapped in tin foil over the heater. That was tasty. There's a place here that smokes cornish hens. Those are to die for heated up over the heater. Tender, juicy, and delicious.

Try out zattarains jambalaya or gumbo.  2 boxes is good for 4-5 adults. I like to add andouille sausage and shrimp.  It's very good after a long day steelheading or while out on the hard water ice fishing. You can either cook it or re-heat while on the ice .

When I can weasel some venison sausage from my brother I love it on the grill. I'm sure that was mentioned above. Some red peppers and onions go well with that especially on a potato roll.  ;D (The real ones) My Weber go anywhere model is fun to take out if I'm not to far from the truck.....I was fishing solo and forced to make do with this:
