Jiffy Model 30 - Leaks Gas
« on: Feb 03, 2014, 07:19 AM »
I have a model 30 that someone gave me and every time I transport it, it leaks gas. I position it with the gas tank up when its laying in the back of the truck and it seems to be leaking out of the gas tank cover. Its a plastic tank and screw on cover. Anyone else have this problem? I leaks gas all over the motor (its not a constant drip that you can see but it must just leak enough over time to make a mess)

Is this the cap that is on the Auger?  If not you need to order one with the thumb screw on top to not have the fuel drip.

So yours doesn't have a screw to close the vent??  Must have gotten lost somewhere along the way.

If it does have a screw to close the vent and it's still leaking it could just be the gasket is torn/missing.  A small O-ring can be used as a replacement gasket.

Mine has a plastic gas tank and plastic cap with what looks like a pinhole in it (assuming its the vent hole. There is no screw, and I dont see how there ever was a screw for this cap.

Some caps have a one way vent system where under the cap what looks like a pinched hose which acts like a check valve.  But even those will go bad and not seal properly after awhile.  Best is these screw vent caps if you only remember to open the vent to drill a hole.

Took a closer look at the inside of the cap and there is as small diameter O-Ring in there and it looks like it wasnt seated correctly. Maybe (hopefully) that was the problem. It was pretty tough to see the O-Ring at all since it is pretty small and the same color as the cap itself

Well I purchased another carb rebuild kit.  It appears to have fixed the problem.  I noticed the needle wasn't sticking out as far on the new one.  I must have pushed the first one down in there to far.  I do notice that it still leaks a tiny bit where the primer hose attaches to the bottom of the carb.  I also saw a few air bubbles there.  It leaked here before.  I can't tell if it came from the plastic fixture or around the hose.  Do they usually leak here?  Will this cause it to run bad?  Should I try replacing the hose?

I'm assuming we're talking about one of these carbs.  Correct?

Rubber needle seat - it should be pressed into the threaded brass part as far as possible.  Put the ridged side in first (away from the needle)

There should be no fuel on the cover/hose side of the diaphragm.  If you have fuel there, you have a problem.

As long as your primer hose isn't cracked and seals tightly on the primer bulb and the nipple on the bottom of the carb, it doesn't need to be replaced.

There's gas leaking from the area of the nipple on the bottom of the carb.  I just can't tell if it's between the nipple and carb or the hose and nipple.

There should be no fuel in that area.  Make sure you have the diaphragm and gasket installed in the proper order.  Should be Diaphragm, gasket, cover.  Also make sure the sealing surface is clean.

Good luck.  I hope you can find your problem.

Update - I got the new gas cap someone provided in a link above, that seemed to fix the leak from the vent in the cap, but I also now see a small leak coming out of the tank where the cap screws on Its very possible this leak was there before and just wasn't as noticeable as the leak from the vent in the old plastic gas cap.

The tank itself is plastic and I don't want to over-tighten the cap. Think a few wraps of Teflon tape would work as a "good enough" fix? I would replace the Teflon tape after every couple times I take the cap on and off. Typically, 1 tank of gas will last me 3 trips out so if that is a simple fix, I'm good with it

Any other ideas?

They are years ahead of your current old classic. You upgrade your gear all the time. Maybe it is time to upgrade the auger. Tanaka's can be carried in your car no leaks no smell. You can attach most any clockwise auger with a simple adapter made by anyone with a lathe.
