Butler Island Champlain
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 08:05 PM »
Ok so I need everyone's help... I am arguing with smelty88 over whether or not to fish the bay on butler island. An ionic shows it as shallow and dropping real quick about 200yds out. I think it must have nice fish, he thinks it's a waste of time... This has been my dream to fish this bay for going on 3 years. So the question is has anyone fished this area? And what's in it? I am hoping someone says it's awesome fishing as he needs a little convincing to venture 3 miles out...

i did not say it was a wast of time rather i said that i would prefer to fish the sharp breaks rather than the shallow waters!

Settle it with a hand auger race!
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable,
a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

I dont use hand augers, i have a jiffy propane. And smelty's broken hand auger is actually mine, so I would win the battle/race by taking it and making him use a spoon to drill the holes. And as for sharp break and not shallows I remind of http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=257757.msg2647505#msg2647505... you know all of those sharp drops in maq bay? the spots where it went from 3' water to 3'2"?

Butler is a long walk, hope conditions stay as they are and we don't get a load of snow.
I did the walk to Savage last year, was wore out when I got back and certainly was spooky being the last off the ice and well after dark. Fished the north end where the rockpile is, did ok on perch, a 20" northern on a jig pole too but all in all probably wasn't worth all the energy I spent doing it.
Sure wish I had an ATV, but gave it to my oldest as a gift for the little farmstead he bought last year. Besides, it needs lots of work to get it ice legal.

I have an atv, so the walk isnt the issue as long as there is enough ice. what do you mean by ice legal? if its registered and has lights and an exhaust its legal to drive from my understanding.

Not sure what your targeting but I have caught some brown trout and salmon while trolling in that bay. It's really sandy in close. I hope you do it. I am looking forward to hearing how it goes.

To be honest I have no idea... 15 tips per person means I can get a fair # of lines in water.  So I would prob set some in the sand shallows, and some on the drops mixed bag of size depth and such and see what happens. I'd b happy with anything.

Thing needs work, let's put that way.

   Butler Island is a fantastic place for open water small mouth and pike.   We always mark fish on the outside of the cove but the fish in at the shoreline always kept us busy.   I always wondered if there might be walleye where the sandy bottom got out to 20+ feet?
Sunny day with a westerly breeze (or none) might be a good location with no competition!

See that was my thought... The state used to stock eyes there in the summer several years back. I think all this input leads me to say it is a must do... Now I just need to send smelty out to scout ice some day...

You can get on at Hathaway's,but better make sure the ice is safe that far out. With the temps the way they've been, hopefully be good soon. Might fish up that way Sat.,I'll post how thick ice is.
