Modified Mickey Mouse Boots!
« on: Jan 04, 2012, 05:36 PM »
I've had my Mickeys for 12 seasons now and have yet to have cold feet! I prefer the blacks b/c they are a little lighter and easier to cover ground in...fished the coldest of weather in them. I rub them down at the start and end of each season with 100% silicone spray. seems to keep the rubber soft and pliable.  I also got sick of slipping on bare ice and losing countless yak trax---so i got really small hex-head sheet metal screws---only a 1/4" long---and screwed them into the tread on my boots.  You can run across the slickest of ice and have no worries---really bites in. The rubber is so soft and thick on the bottoms of those boots no worries for leaks. One of the best mods ive come up with!

I really want to stud my Mickey's, but I'm nervous about puncturing the trapped felt in the sole.

If you look at a cut through of a Mickey, you'll see how thin the rubber really is on the bottom in the tread section, and once you puncture that air/felt layer in the sole, they're done.

I also saw on here a guy got a few sizes up and put a Sorel/Kamik type liner in them - that's a stroke of brilliance if you're not walking far.  As it is, I feel like I'm Frankenstien with properly fitting Mickey's, tromping around in boots two sizes up would be very humorous.

Yeah i will get some pics up tomorrow....there is plenty of rubber there. Yeah they are just self tapping 1/4" hex head sheet metal screws. Its crazy how much traction you get from them. Ive got friends now that are screwing em into all sorts of different boots. My next boots are going to be those 2000g Cabela Rubbers also---and i will screw them too! LOL

yeah 1/4" heads---thats a great idea for the wheeler tires. might have to try that out. do you have dedicated tires for that, or just put them on then take em off when your not on ice?

umm we have a stock set we put chains on and we put them in my dads 27'' tiatians to see if they worked better and they didnt make that much of a difference, n lets jsut say the studs didnt last long with the power of the 660 grizzly and roads : ) made a cool spark show, i dont know if we are re studding them this year or not i have a sled to ride this year so i dont need em but may have to invest in some studs cause we still have no snow up here and thats how i make my money in the winter after school...

I've had them in my pac boots for years. I actually had to replace the entire set last week because I had worn the edge of the screws. I did this after struggling with cleats one too many times.

Do you change your boots when you get to the lake or do you wear these in your truck/car? Seems like they would be hard on the floor mats?  But a great idea for slick ice!!

Tore off the covers on both clutch and brake pedals with my studded boots.  Lesson learned.  Just gotta keep the boots warm before putting them on.  Still, best traction ever.
