Gill nets in Bay of Quinte?
« on: Dec 06, 2011, 01:42 PM »
A recent thread about poachers http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=201220.20 got me thinking about something I saw about a month ago while fishing quinte.  I had intended to ask about this but forgot.

Are there laws that allow gill netting for natives on Bay of Quinte?  I was trolling around BoQ just east of the adolphustown ferry and all of a sudden a boat with about 5 guys (couldn't tell if they were native) pulled up right in front of me and raked in a huge net full of fish, they continued doing this about every 50 yards or so.  I was blown away and gave up to fish elsewhere.  Is this actually legal?

Did you say managed. Most of the gill nets are left in to long, the fish are half rotten when they do pull them.I'd call that piss poor management.

The majority of the nets you see on the BOQ are actually hoop nets rather than gill nets. These guys are legal and mostly catching perch and other panfish but are allowed a quota of walleye, pike, whitefish, etc. While there unfortunately is illegal gill netting happening its mostly small scale and is only by a small number of individuals. The commercial fishery however is closely monitered and regulated by the MNR.

I ran into one of these nets one time coming back to Shermans at night  :o wasn't marked that well. But always wondered what kind of net it was. If I remember correctly it was laid out in a circle with the net just extending past the surface of the water.

I have no background on it other what I have read in an Outdoor Canada magazine...From what I read there is some fine tuning to be done in some area's. The magazine showed lots of wasted fish and lots of prize fish that have been left on the banks to rot mostly muskie. :(

wow, that sucks.  I had no idea that was legal, seems like an unfair way to obliterate a fishery
