$100 fine and an additional $20/fish... IMO The fine should be much, much higher. It'll be interesting to see what happens to them if they do catch them.

Just another page in the battle between the state and tribal netting. Piles of fish that aren't walleyes (northerns, bass, muskies, etc) that were caught in gill nets are found rotting every spring here after the tribal netting harvest. The fact that this happened at this time of year is what's puzzling.

That's highly unlikely. Like I said before, it happens every year here. Unfortunately, it falls under tribal jurisdiction and the tribal officers rarely pursue the offenders and if they catch them, they're never prosecuted.

It's really sad. It's a knife in the back of all of the years of conservation efforts.

what exactly is tribal netting and why are they allowed to do it? If i saw some idiots doing that on our lakes, it would be a bad day for them

Under the 1837 treaty, certain lands were ceded to the local tribes, giving them game rights. Today, bands of natives come from as far away as north central Wisconsin claiming tribal rights to gill net walleyes during the spawn. They go out and net thousands of pounds of walleyes and because gill nets don't discriminate, they discard the rest.

Millions of our tax dollars are spent every year to restock Mille Lacs so they can net them every spring and sell them at fish frys in their casinos . . . you know, the way their ancestors did.

It's a pretty hot topic here because none of the legislators will touch the issue. There are a large group of sportsmen like PERM http://www.perm.org/ and CASSToday http://www.casstoday.com/ that are doing what they can to put an end to selective sovreignty and enforce equal protection and promote responsible natural resource management by EVERYONE.

the fine seems so minute... if i was caught with fish over limit i think its an even bigger fine then taking hundreds of fish and dumping them....

how does that make sense... hell i think they can even take your boat and equip if your to much over your limit.

So is this in an area that people can hunt? Could be an area that they were trying to draw in Bears or other animals for hunting purposes. Just a thought. Anyway you look at it ,it is surely a waste. Nope Eastern black bears don't do fish like west coast bears do. a big pile of old doughnuts laced with honey and molasses works much better to attract bears.

I believe some jerk probably set the net and then it was not convenient to come back and check it. By the time they got back the fish in the net were dead and rotting so the only cleaned the most recent freshest ones and dumped the rest.

If they gill net the walleye like that id give em the finger and stop stocking it til those degenerates stop showing up with nets...sure it'll hurt the lakes fishing but just put the efforts into other nearby lakes that doesn't allow that...its that simple
