Walleye tip-up question: Weight or no weight?
« on: Jan 07, 2010, 07:25 PM »
Ok guys, until now I've only really tip-up fished for pike and jigged for panfish, mostly perch.  Tomorrow a fellow employee and myself are going to venture out into the Adirondacks and try tip-up fishing for their big cousin-the Walleye!

So I am setting my tip-ups up later tonight with size 8 trebles with a glow bead above the hook with 8lb fluorocarbon leaders, probably around 3' long, with a medium shiner and was wondering, first of all is this a decent start... my main question is should I add a split-shot, or no split-shot.  We will be fishing anywhere from 15-30 FOW and the area is sandy flats adjacent to some islands... there are also a few areas close by with some weeds.

While waiting for flags we will be jigging for perch and eyes out, around and in my fishing buddies new Nanook 2-man...

Any info positive or negative would be very helpful, thanks!!!

A few things,

#1 if you wanna save on $, go through get your holes all drilled, cleaned out, and set your traps in the holes your gonna be fishing WITHOUT bait while its still lite out. This will save you from unwanted perch bites. Then simply go through at sunset and just put a minnow on each one of your tip-ups. If you do this, make sure you DON'T leave the tip-up on the ice while your waiting for the sun to go down, put it in the hole. If you leave it out, your spool will freeze and you might as well not be fishing.

#2 use 3-4 inch hunts or suckers

#3 I use to use 10 lb mono with a split shot about 10 inches above. Hunts are very lively and you need a stiffer line so they wont tie knots in your line.

GOOD LUCK, LET US KNOW

only problem is with no weight  when a fish comes up to slam your bait...the bait will sometimes swim up and the fish will lose interest.  just my opinion what ive seen

I agree, gotta have a weight on there.  Not that you won't catch without one, but walleye fishing, you want every advantage you can get.  There is no guarantee where your bait will end up without a weight on your mainline or leader.... unless your using dead bait.

I don't use a split shot, but I do have a decent size snap swivel on my tip up line, connected to my 3ft. leader.  I don't seem to have any problems and have been catching just as many fish, if not more, as everyone else with split shot 10" above their minnow.

FWIW
