oil question ?
« on: Dec 04, 2009, 08:58 AM »
I have a strike-master Mag 2000. I couldn't find my owners manual so i went online to strike-master. Getting ready to mix my gas and oil and forgot what the oil fuel recommendation were. I found that online the owners manual says to mix 1g gas with 3.2 fl oz of strike-master oil. that did not sound right so i looked a little harder and found my owners manual and it said to mix 1g gas with 5 fl oz of strike-master oil. Then with a little more looking found a sticker on my auger that said mix the gas and oil at 24:1 or 5 fl oz of oil to 1 g gas. Then checked my oil and guess what?. I have two bottles of strike-master oil both say mix with one gallon of gas. But one is 5.33 fl oz or a mix rate of 24:1 the other is 3.2 fl oz or a mix rate of 40:1 Which is the right amount?. confusing.

You could run it at 24:1 to be safe. It will be more smoke but again you would be safe. After that tank I would switch it over to Amsoil Saber or something similar. Less smoke, higher revs and you can mix down to 100:1.

Pretty sure amsoil does not recommend mixing less than 50:1 on Small premix engines. And the age of the auger plays a part. You may get away with it, but i personally wouldn't.

I had researched this a few years back and that's not what Amsoil or Tanaka had told me :

Gas/Oil Mix

I honestly have had trouble with my strike master with oil.  Doesn't matter if I run it rich or thinned down.  It still smokes like a son of a gun and the exhaust port still gets all nasty and has to be cleaned alot.  But I'm not that strong and it is light enough for me to haul around and it always starts.

I had this same issue last year so I called Strikemaster.  They told me to use the 3.2/1 ration.  The previous mixture 5/1 proved to be too rich and caused excessive smoke and oil residue.  I used the 3.2 mixture and had no problem with it at all.  The exhaust output seemed to be less but not all that much.  The engine ran just fine with this 3.2/1 mixture.

Thats what a straight dino oil does well, smokes and make carbon. ;D

The 5.33oz (24:1) bottle is more than likely older than the other bottle. From my understanding Jiffy and Strikemaster reformulated the oil a couple years ago and changed the mixture to 40:1. You won't have any problems running either. I would recommend switching to a full synthetic oil in the future. A full synthetic oil will burn much cleaner and produce a lot less carbon.

Thanks guys. Called strike-master and they confirmed that the new specs are for the 40:1 or 3.2 fl oz per gallon of fresh gas. Changed it because of oil build up in engine and muffler and smoke. Now all I need is some Ice!!!!!!!!!!!!!. again thanks for the info.

I use Amsoil Saber Professional 100:1 oil in my auger and I mix it 80:1. Amsoil recommends this oil mixed up to 100:1 for two strokes. You can mix it 24:1, 32:1, 40:1. 50:1 or whatever you wish. My auger runs better, faster, idles better and starts easier with this mix. I have been using this stuff in every air cooled two stroke that I own for about ten years with zero problems. If Amsoil didn't recommend using it at 100:1 it sure wouldn't say so on the label on their bottle. I would say that it's just good stuff.  ;)
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Saber is a good product but I have had issues with their oil in the past. I prefer their dominator. Has  better storage and doesn't burn off as quickly as the saber and interceptor does. I am talking about internal burn off not what comes out the exhaust.

I spoke to the Amsoil rep at the St. Paul ice show on Friday.
He said that any of the 2 stroke oils made by Amsoil are ok at 50:1

He said that Saber is made specifically for Augers and can be run at 100:1

I use the outboard injector oil by Amsoil, (which can be used as a premix) at 50:1

The rep said it is fine, as long as it is an oil for 2 strokes, and not an oil that you would use in a 4 stroke engine.
He said that the 4 stroke oil is not made to be mixed with gas, but the 2 stroke oil is.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
