Get a map...use what you know of open water habits for the fish you're targeting. Pay attention to weather and soulunar tables. Look for the best feeding times. Work transition areas. Places where fish move from deep to shallow to feed.

Keep an eye on others fishing around you. Most are more than willing to help you out. The years will teach you what you need to know.

The learning is half of the fun. I don't own a Flasher, but last winter.... a buddy of mine borrowed one from a friend of his for us to use. As we were using it, we ended up fighting for who got to use it, because whoever was using it was outfishing the other one 2 fish to 1. Needless to say, I will own one prior to the 1st of the year.

Always watch a pearson that lives on the lake they will go to there best fishing spot first.JMO

I'd like to add to that...
"always watch a person who sucessfully catches fish and lives on a lake, sometimes he will watch you watch him and sneak back to fish the best spots after he is satisfied no one is watching" I use this one myself and I don't even live on a lake...well, my bed is not there anyway.

HAHA thats a great tip. Another one...if you find a real productive spot awy from where everyone concentrates  fishing, dont keep going back to the same spot every time out or the people that fish the surrounding a lot will figure you out...also if a whack of people are fishing within a small area it might not be because there are fish there but only cuz they are lazy...they might just not want walk to far off the warf/shore. The first guy on the ice happens to be lazy and say screw it im fishn here, the next guy that comes says ooh there must be fish there that guy is there and so on....set up above or below them a hundred yards or so and a lot of times youll find some fish, especially if its an area that fish follow up and down or come in and out of like a narrow cove or channel
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

I'm pretty new to the Ice too, my advice is bring an extra set of clothes keep them in your vehicle. If you have the chance do a polar bear plunge for charity after you do one, you always be aware when on the ice! Stay away from the crowds most people are there to bs until an hour before sunset. Bring beer you will be amazed at the secrets told over a couple free beers!

I think the best idea would be to invest in an aqua-vu or a showdown, they really put what you are fishing into view.  Now these things are going down in price, like aqua-vu has came out with fish-tv for only $100 and they help a lot.  The showdown has recently went up in price so not the best time to get one of those but if you look at other flashers(showdown is not a flasher but has the same purpose and I think works better) units they are around the same price.

If you try jigging, dont get discourage with it at first.
One thing you can try with is to let the lure fall to the bottom, lift it, drop it, lift it, drop it, then reel it up 1-2' off the bottom and hold it steady(Lure)Perch love this technique. If you dont have a Vexalar, look for 10-30' of water...20' being ideal area.
