Flip over shelters available?
« on: Jan 20, 2015, 02:59 PM »
I generally fish alone and I really don't like fighting my Hub shelter when it's windy so it's time to get serious about getting flip over shelter sled.  Nearly lost my shanty on Friday from the wind.  It looks as if they are starting to go on sale online but the $200 shipping fee hurts the deal.  I'm really interested in an insulated version especially the Otter 1200 Lodge & the Frabil Predator.

Does anyone know if there are any in stock anywhere in MT?

Contact Sportsman's Warehouse in Bozeman. They have a couple on the floor.

Scheels has a way bigger selection than sportsmanship, even though its 2 hrs from me it was worth the drive

It’s unclear to me what you’re looking for. You don’t like fighting a hub but the two flips you mentioned are really heavy compared to other available brands and models. 140# is nearly twice the weight of my insulated solo flip.

I just switched to the otter Cabin, plenty of room and saved me about 30 lbs.  I drove to scheels in Billings which was worth the money considering they had it for $150 off the regular price.

Born late, what flipover are you using and are you happy with it in most conditions?

I have a Clam Nanook Thermal and love it. It’s tight as a two-person rig but roomy for solo fishing with two rods. Like most flips, it can be a tough pull in snow without a ski-sled underneath. If you plan to pull without a machine, avoid the temptation to “trick out” a flip since mods = weight. When shopping, it’s a good idea to look closely at the seats and framework since that’s likely to be the major source of weight.

I need sunlight in the winter and only fish in a shelter when it’s absolutely necessary. A flip gives you the ability to instantly raise and lower the roof or just set it up as a windbreak.

I switched from a quick fish 3 to a 2 man flip frabill 3 years ago. This year I am back to the hub. It is quieter and more secure in the wind. It is just as fast to set up/tear down and anchor. I can strap the hub to my 4wheeler rack. I really hate dragging a sled behind the 4wheeler unless I absolutely have to. Plus I don't have to deal with loading and unloading the sled shack evey trip. Most times out the shanty just goes along for the ride and never even gets setup anyway.

well considering I asked this 5 years ago...it was about the setting it up in wind alone. I didn't care about the weight because I can horse those big sleds around just fine.  If it makes you feel better I bought a Frabil Aegis shortly after posting this.
