Tips on Lakers
« on: Mar 14, 2006, 08:21 PM »
Need a little help here. Went Lake trout fishing in a Northern shield lake today. Enjoyed a little luck, but not until towards the end of the day. I was fishing between 40 to 80 feet of water with a variety of williams spoons, bucktail jigs. I must say, it was a slow day. Any tips for Lakers (water depth, structure, times, etc.) for this time of year would be helpful. Thanks in advance...

we almost always find them here in lake superior in the bottom 2 - FOW. tip your jigs with a smelt tail, white colors or pearl seem to work best.

Well if the lake your fishing has smelt then the lakers are following them in close to tiny creek mouths at least thats what they do where I fish, the smelt congregate in large numbers before they spawn around these areas..

Go towards any inlets and try there. Use the same lures you got now, and tip em with something.

Good luck! :)

We have luck jigging for lakers with white swedish pimples with a smelt head or tail on the hook. We jig anywheres from just off the bottom to 8 ft off the bottom. Also a tip-up with a smelt(dead or alive) or sucker on the hook just off the bottom works well also.
