Check for yourself!
« on: Jan 21, 2016, 02:16 PM »
Just want to emphasize the point of checking ice yourself and not just taking someone's word for it.. A friend of mine fished a pond near me and reported there was 6" of good black ice. I went today to fish it and being the person I am I checked all around the pond myself so I was sure how much I'd be on and there was 2-3" in some spots and nothing over 4".. Sketchy for sure. I know some people who would've just run out there and started punching holes.. Could have been bad news for someone heavier than me (180lbs). Just a heads up! Tight lines!
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Always good practice for sure! I like being only 180 as well, it's almost like walking on water  ;D

Seconding this, I went to a place on Saturday that someone had posted about here, saying it was a solid four inches all over the place. I saw his holes and there was four inches right there, but as you went further out it got very close to one inch.

good rule of thumb.. don't rely on the computer to determine good and bad ice. gotta judge conditions yourself

Right on HD, always take all reports with a grain of salt... there's a lot of folks out there that just don't have "eye rulers" and can't tell the difference between 2" and 2' but report without using a measure anyway. Glad to hear you stayed dry.

Smart son..i
when chuck norris played golf for money, chuck marked down a hole in zero every time, the golf pro said, "chuck: you can't score zero on a hole." Chuck norris turned towards the man and said, "I'm chuck norris, the man proceeded to pour gas over his body and set himself on fire because that would be less painful than getting roundhouse kicked by chuck norris....chuck norris roundhouse kicked him in the face anyways

Couldn't agree more....  I use the postings here to determine if I'll bother to drive to a certain body of water... but once there, take my own measurements/precautions before I deem it safe for fishing - especially since I don't have the luxury of only weighing in at 180.  :(

Or you could use the method some guy from mass used a few years back!  Just drive your new SUV out and test the ice!  It worked for him.  He checked and the ice wasn't safe!  LOL

Good work Haightdaddy. Always, always, always carry your chisel. Not across your shoulder either like i've seen some folks do and end up in the drink. Put it to the ice. That's what it's for.

Good to hear this.

I think this was 04 or 05 on winni.  The guy actually told police that he was going out to check if the ice was safe for the derby the following week.  Guy was lucky he made it out before it went under.

I'm in the 180 club too.
I bring my float suit and PICS
I know you do also, AA,  :) but it don't hurt to be a light weight either.

Agree with all the above on using that chisel!

NEWFOUND CIRCUS, Guppy's pics caused me to ponder?
I know you folks have your own shanty (demo) or rescue, whatever the case may be.

Do you have "in house" vehicle recovery also?

We've had some vehicles go through the lake in the past. Quite a sight to see....vehicles mostly destroyed during the process. We do have a underwater / recovery diver locally and our FnG are trained in underwater rescue (heard some really sad ((thought provoking / disturbing)) stories which i won't go into, of some of the underwater body recoveries).

We (Newfound Circus) have retrieved ATV's, Snowmobiles and People in the past that have gone through the ice.

We do what we need to so we can get back to fishing as quickly as possible. Everyone plays a part when needed.

I agree. This early in the season ice picks are a necessity.

as checking ice as you go and trusting your gut are important, knowing the body of water your on is a factor . things like current and springs will surprise you on how the ice will form. knowing your lake and the areas that have features like this help you stay safer early on.

I completely agree. I know this pond probably better than most of the town so to see him go on out to report back what he did was a bit surprising to me ???.. Guess some just need to learn the hard way... I told him what I found and he said he couldn't believe it because he measered all the wholes... I think he was measuring in CM or something  ::)

I love being the only one on a huge body of water, wearing my PFD and recovery picks around my neck and a guy with 2 kids walks right out and asks me if the ice is safe... "NO, NO IT ISN'T"

Thanks Jiggin. As I guessed.
Know a guy who had one vehicle find the bottom of Newfound.
Key word is "know".  ;)
No need to go in to details about body recovery. I shutter when I think about it.
Most of us know, chisel before walking. Hope they take heed.
