TIP DOWNS VS TIP UPS???
« on: Feb 09, 2006, 03:50 PM »
Which would be better for whopper pike? Have some of each. Will be using tip ups.
Has anyone modified regular tip downs for larger critters?
Boy do I love seeing those flags fly!

Buckski, The tip downs I made have a small spool on them with a crude drag knob but if I set the drag right and put heavier line on them I don't see why you couldn't set them up with bigger bait. I don't usually fish for Northerns to close to the bottom so you would have to set like a drop shot hook at the right depth or even put two or three on to see what depth is working? Just my thoughts and they aint worth much.

Interesting question, Buckski. I would love to see that.
It would have to be a stout tip-down.
Really stout!

I use the heritage tip ups for pike..and any other fish.. If your using the bigger bait you can put a close pin over the gate and the bait wont be able to trip it.....But the pike sure can .the heritages cost a little more than others but they are worth the investment because they are built to last a lifetime

I would have to agree with Billybono.  I have hooked many pike on tip downs perch fishing and lost that battle.  I lost a tip down the one time.  I would keep the tip downs for crappies and perch.

Thanks for the visuals guys. They are some nice looking rigs. What happens when a big fish slams them??? Can they take it?? Are they sturdy on the ice or do they tip over in the wind?? They are a similar design to the windlass tip-up that jigs the bait with the wind. The instructions for those is to pack snow around the base to give it more stabilazation. Are the tip-downs included in the tip-up number or with the hand rod number. If you guys are interested in selling some of those let me know and I might be able to get you started. Pm me for details as I cant mention my site on the forum. They say it is spammy.

Where the flag meets the gate run a close pin right across...... try tripping the flag once or twice to make the flag will still trip....Ive also used rubber bands down at the bottom of the gate near the spool.... Hope that helps

tip downs are too sensitive, they are nice for small fish, the big lunkers will pull those right through the hole.  Stick with the tip ups.

Hello,
I was reading that the tip-downs are excellent for the fish that like to run a lot. Als9 the lite hitting and finnicy fish. They should be set with no drag what so ever. The fish should'nt feel any resistance. A lite hitter like a walleye would be a perfect candidate for the tip-down. ( So the book says) I'm thinking about making a few over the summer and seeing how they work out next year.

I agree, walleyes hit harder than u would think. i think the tip-downs are for crappie and ma-by perch, but i definitely perfer tip-ups for bigger game like walleyes and pike and up, thats what i just have to say, it might be wrong or right ill leave it up to you to find out.

i would not even think of using a tip down on a walleye set up, might as well stay home and dump the minnows in the potty.  Walleye will Nail the lure, minnow or bait, that the fun, when the reel is spinning and the water is flying out of the hole.

go get'em fellas.
