Alternative to spinning reels.
« on: Nov 27, 2011, 09:55 AM »
Hi

I am looking to get a few new rods for the ice season and am wondering if anyone is using anything other than spinning reels on their rods. I have been thinking of either a baitcasting reel or fly reel instead. Most of the fishing happens in a portable house in shallow water and I have been having a hard time with line memory and twist and thought either of those two would be a possible cure.

I made the switch to fly reels and baitcasters last year.It takes a little adjustment from using a spinning reel.No comparison on the line
twist I was getting.I really don't need the drag in either set up.I use a left handled bait caster even though I'm right handed because it's
easier for me. You can't open the bail and let the lure drop but most of the time I use light tackle that the weight of the lure wouldn't
allow the line to freefall off the spool anyway.

The fly reel is more of a finesse thing for me.  I use it sparingly.  The baitcast reel is used a lot more often for me than my spinning reels.  One thing is, I'm using some rather expensive baitcasting reels compared to my spinning reels to get the performance that I want.  It's so that smaller lures can pull the line off the baitcasting reel instead of me manually pulling line from the spool.  And there's always the two peg ice rod.  LOL.  Not that I can ever find my old one, but I don't miss it.

That is a good point. I have a baitcaster that I use for summer fishing that I might have to put on a winter pole to see how it works.
Thanks

Thanks. That Crappie reel looks neat. Google came up with a few different designs with some looking like a Fly reel, some like a baitcaster and one that looks like a hybrid of the two. Is there a particular one that you have used so I know exactly which one?

A couple years ago I started buying old Penn levelwinds on Ebay and rebuilding them in the summer. (You can find rebuild kits for almost all Penn reels.) They work great and you don't have to have a ton of money in them. Pinch the line guide together just a little bit with a pair of pliars and it helps to get the ice off the line too.

Check out my post on panfish rods, tons of pics
But crappie reel is black and looks like a fly reel, kind of.

I used the crappie reels a couple times.  Trouble is the pickup is slow (small arbor) and letting line out takes a little more time.  I switched back to Schooley reels on many of my rods.
Simple and effective.

Found what i hope to be a good fly reel. It's an Uncle Bucks crappie reel, model UB10. Check them out at bass pro shops. I got mine from www.monkscrappie.com for $4.95 each.

I use the Schooleys a lot too. Not fancy, but they get the job done and have zero problems. But I'm fishing pretty shallow most of time.
I'd rather be :icefish:

I decided at this point to put my bait caster on an ice pole and try that. Got out last night and I really like using it so one rod down anyway. I do think I will try one of the crappie reels at some point though as they are less expensive.
