Wow! This the way to lighten the load in deep snow.
« on: Feb 15, 2015, 12:48 PM »
;D     Last season I bought two new Nils hand augers, a 41/2 inch and a 6 inch.   The 6 inch will also work with a battery operated hand drill.   In December I went to Ebay and purchased a 20 volt Dewalt with two lithiium batteries for $99.   For an additional $19 I purchased a stainless steel drill adaptor to go on the 41/2 inch Nills.    Total weight of drill and Nils is 8 pounds compared to my 30 pound Jiffy :o
Each of the batteries will do 20 6 inch holes or 30 41/2 inch holes.  I use the small auger to run and gun looking for fish with the flasher and swap to the 6 inch if I find a hot spot.
I like it ;D

 I have two Mora drill and they are definitely slower than either Nils.   Big advantage with the Nils augers is that you don't put much down pressure wile cutting so there is little chance of the blade locking in the ice and twisting your wrist.

I too have the Nils 6"  I'm using the Milwaukee Red Lithium 20v, it cuts so easily and I get about 25-35 holes per charge..and it so much easier to haul around than my gas auger.  It's great for run an gun fishing...
I just want to go ice fishing and ignore my adult problems

This set up is as light as you can get gas wise. Motor never goes dead. Mora on these motors are as good as a Nils.

I have an 8" Nils that I've used for about 5 years now. I don't even mind drilling by hand. It's less work than hauling my Jiffy around. I've got a hole drilled by hand faster than I can start the Jiffy.
Last year I got a Clam plate and a Milwaukee 18v fuel. I use a short little 6" Mora for early ice, it cuts 2" a second all day long. It turns the Nils pretty good too, def more work on the drill and get less holes per battery. Still works awesome though. Its a great setup. I would sell my Jiffy if I could bring myself to take the big hit on it.

I'm glad to hear that the drill will work with the 8" Nils.   I don't think I will plan on using anything bigger than my 6" Nils.
When I'm after pike I'm lucky to have a big healthy friend who will put my old Jiffy to work.

The one in my left hand is a Tanaka 270 with a 7 inch Mora. The one in the right is one I made. It is an Echo gas drill that I made some handles for and has a 6 in. Mora. .Around 18 lbs.

Yeah, older....and wiser!

Remember the old adage "Work smarter, not harder"?
I have switched back to my hand augers now for easy of transport and the fact that it helps warm you up cranking those holes, and I don't mind a little exercise while I'm out fishing! (Doctor said I should exercise more, so this should qualify?

I think that I recognize this post with the augers leaning against it.  ;D  Drilling must have been easy that day. Dick I'll have to see your setup in action before the season ends.

::)  No Denny.  That's a secret post?   Look forward to letting you try out my ultra light drills any time  north or south!
Dick  I have hopes that the morning will begin above zero in couple of weeks.   I have half of a perch fry in the fridge waiting for me to catch the other half?
21 below this morning but it warmed right up to 15 this afternoon :'(
