Otter articulated rod holder mounted to hut base or bucket works awesome....cheap and simple and when not in use they fold back and out of the way.  have them on my predator and kenai.. love em.

A little different approach that I have used is a catch cover brand hole cover that has a slit in it. I have a bad habit of losing radios down the hole. While fishing, it is easy to remove the cover after a hook set.

I started building my own, because I hate paying for the name sticker on some ice gear.

I built these so you can grab the rod and set the hook without removing the rod from the holder.

pat. pending.

Last year I used my 13fishing Wicked rod and reel for the first time.  Nice rod, very happy with it.  Set it down for just a minute lying inside my shelter sled while I played with my ther rod...   split second later I see the butt end of the rod going down the hole - damn pike!

Bought another one this year and I now have rod holders made out of PVC pipe so that can't happen again.  Agrh pike!
How long is a piece of string?

Open bail = problem solved. I dead stick one hole by setting the rod on a pail or in a rod holder & have yet to lose one. If i'm on the ice I make a pile from the chips & set the rod butt in at an angle with the bale open & have yet to be spooled. :icefish:

Always worry about setting my high end rods and reals and leaving them un attended ...

Best to real them up .... into the hole.

I Love running a Bait caster rod as my dead stick .... Open bail in free spool on a bucket rod holder no worries about getting snatched or even detected as it spools out.

This rod and reel combination with a Trimmed Ice buster bobber ... is deadly .... hammered many a finicky Perch, Walleye's ... and plenty of Gaters ...
Set the hook till their eyes cross

We can fish with 5 poles here, so there is always a few dead sticks spread around. I use a 5 gal. bucket lid with some rope and spring loaded clip that is attached to the rod or the reel. I use about 6' of rope. Just remember to unclip when you start fighting a fish if its windy. I had one get tangled around my line  :o  because I didn't unclip it and it was really windy. It will not fit down a 10" hole.
On the ice again, just can't wait to get on the ice again, the life I love is catching fish with my friends, and I can't wait to get on the ice again. "kinda Willie Nelson"

"Any seasoned ice fisherman is painfully aware of the strange gravitational pull developed by a hole drilled through the ice.  The force of the pull is directly proportional to the value of the item in proximity to said hole."

Me and and few buddies played quarters in a sleeper up on Mille Lacs.  Not a good idea in a fish house, I think we went through a roll of quarters.  But the person tossing had to take a shot if it went down a fish hole.   Somewhere on Sloppy Joes flat is a wishing well full of quarters.

When  I was 5 my Dad tethered the rod to the boat - much like tuna fisherman do...Why make it complex?

paracord + carabiner + large heavy thing = no swimming
Trust me, when the Zamboni driver says "You won't catch fish through that hole", he knows of what he speaks.
