this will end up a debate, but that's okay. I have made my rigs for years quick strikes rigs w/ trebles, but I have since gone to circle hooks, for a few reasons. I have missed fish on poor hooksets, with QSR, with circles , you do not set the hook , or wait for second runs , or any of that , you simply stop the line. The hook generally sets in the corner of the mouth which now  makes for easier hook removal, and takes the fishes teeth out of the equation. Also , if it is an undersize fish it is easier to release the fish unharmed. I have released a number of undersize fish, with trebles, that have had blood running out of both gills , knowing they would die. So that is why I changed to circles. I like mustad, or gatsu, at 5/0-6/0, good luck to you  check out Whities rigs , which ever one you use, I think under tip ups section

Tip-up section in the index has lots of info and chatter about hooks/rigs. Check it out.

It is my opinion, that J hooks should not be used on tip ups. Trebles work great on quick strike rigs. I have never tried a circle hook quick strike rig, but a single circle hook works ok, but is much more difficult to use.

2 and 4 octopus hooks on medium and large shiners work well for me. Personally I hate trebles. Just a pain as they grab everything. JMO.

Circle hooks are great but can mess up a fish that really swallows a bait

Quick Strike Rigs with Double Rider Hooks. When I can't find them, I make them!

I can't bring myself to use treble hooks anymore.  When I target pike I'm letting them go, and when I target eyes I feel like the trebles can be lethal for the ones that have to be released.  I usually run octopus hooks but have tried circles for pike without much luck...

I only use octopus hooks and will not have any trouble catching perch to musky.

Can not use anything but a single hook in NH with live bait.  Makes for an easier decision.

I mainly use octopus hooks now. Do use trebles on waters with larger pike in them.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR OPINIONS AND ADVICE. I SEEM TO HAVE HAD A FEW TO MANY ISSUES WITH TREBLE HOOKS LAST YEAR AND PLANNED ON CHANGING AND WANTED TO SEE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WAS USING. TREBLE HOOK DO CATCH ON EVERYTHING AND CAN BE A PAIN TO GET OUT OF A FISHES MOUTH. ILL TRY A FEW DIFFERENT OPTIONS AND LET EVERYONE KNOW IT TURNS OUT.. BRING ON THE ICE!! Haha

maybe you knew, circle hooks, and octopus hooks are very similar, and If I were out shopping, I would look for circle, but would be fine if I could only find octopus. If you see both at your supplier, put them side by side, not much difference. good luck this year

They are very very different hooks. Octopus hooks can be pulled for a hookset because the hook point isn't that curved toward the eye whereas a circle hook has an extreme angle on the hook point which is pointed inwards. You are not supposed to set a circle hook and should just allow the fish to actually swallow the bait and then just slowly tighten the line. The goal is to have the hook point catch right in the corner of the mouth.

Without knowing what you are fishing for, it's like saying that you want to know tires you should buy for your vehicle without specifying what kind of vehicle you have.

Different species may require different hooks/rigs to ensure better hookups.

i fish 3 hooks on my rigs, cuz i'm usually fishing for trout. usually go with an egg hook up top, a baitholder J hook in the middle and a treble on bottom. haven't really noticed a difference in hooking/landing percentage, though i do recommend using larger hooks, especially those with longer shanks for trout, cuz they'll swallow any hook without a second thought, and it is REALLY hard to pull a tiny treble from a trout's gullet.

When fishing tipups I only fish for pike.I use homemade quick strike rigs size 6 eagle claw laser hooks with 24 inch steel leaders. Why the long. leaders? My PB 42.5 inch pike had 23.5 inches of steel down his throat and only ran maybe 10 feet of line with a 8 inch bait.
