Anyone using the Berkley Gulp Alive Fish Fry ?
« on: Nov 25, 2010, 07:01 AM »
I've seen a couple of ads and 1 video of these baits and I'm looking for some real world reviews of this Berkley Product. I think these Fish Fry would be just the ticket for cutting down the cost of buying lots of live bait that have to be changed constantly !

I bought my first batch of the fry and will let you know what I think. So far I have been using gulp minnow heads and gulp waxies and both are top notch products

I use it. Biggest issue is the little guys pull on the tail. Other than that it gets their attention. Especially if you get that tail to quiver. Caught my bigest crappies on them.

I've been using the Gulp Alive micro baits during both hard and open water seasons for the last year.  xcr440 is right on about the tail biters pulling off the tails.  I got my hands on some of the 1" leeches this last spring.  They worked awesome for open water gills and such.  They are about the same thickness as the fish fry tails but they are wider.  I'm hoping the extra width equates to a more durable bait.

I think in general you can't go wrong with a Gulp Alive product.... as long as the shape of the bait fits your needs / fishing style. If the tail is making the fish short bite on you.... pinch off a little of the tail and you're good to go!!

Worked great for me. I loved them for site fishing, just made the tails dance and watched the Bluegills enhale.

I tried the maggot ones and not a single fish touched them, I may have to try the fish fry and see if it works better.

There is a good thread going on here about it: http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=154812.0

I bought a bunch of berkley stuff back in sept to try ice fishing this winter. we picked up some of the 1" minnows in different colors, some white maggots, and some pink ones, and a couple colors of the honey worms.

We have tried all of it so far on the open water, and i already had to buy a couple more jars of the white maggots because they work so well on the rainbows. ;) The minnows caught lots of bluegills. :-\  and nothing on the honey worms so far.

Havent tried the fry but the minnow heads work great better than the real thing and stay on the hook longer.
Old fishermen never die, they just smell that way.

I've been using the 1" fish fry since last ice season. Great product, like others have said the fine tail seems to make them irresistible. I used to have one rod with a Ratso tied on at all times, now I use these. So far this ice season I've caught crappie, channel cats, yellow bass, drum, bluegill, and wipers on the 1" chartreuse minnow fry. I've been using the Northland Mud Bug http://www.northlandtackle.com/Category/main.taf?cat=358&pc=231 and threading the fry on. Bass pro has them for $5.99, at least here.

Shameless plug for a site sponsor....
FishUSA has them for $5.95 a jar.
Save a buck or two a jar anyway.
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)
