Believe it or not we actually have a guy round here that jigs for them and does quite well catching them.   I do remember as a kid my Dad would filet them and they were actually pretty good ;)

They are really good eating, only caught one through the ice.  Slay them in the summer fishing after hours.

I have jigged up a few but never caught one on live bait.  By the size of that one, he ain't shy of the shiners.

Let me in on this before I do something stupid. I've caught a couple open water fishing over the years and don't remember anything special  from handling them.

the very front fin turns into a spike, more or less. For some reason it seems to only be on the larger ones.

Catfish have three spines: one on each side where the dorsal and pectoral fins are. Handling them is as much a matter of experience than anything. Youtube actually has some viddies on the subject.

They contain no poison, but bacteria on the spines (not to mention the fact that the spines are barbed) can be cause quite a bit of pain.

Anyone wanting help ridding a pond of 'em, just let me know! I'll happily come haul 'em out!

At $7/lb for farmed catfish fillets at Hanaford, I'll happily risk a spine or three!

So let me ask you guys this, how do you prep them? Just fillets? I pull them constantly and feed em to the eagle, been that way since I was a kid.

I only fillet larger fish... otherwise I skin 'em, batter 'em up, and fry them.

They are good eating but can be a PITA to skin the first few times. I like the fact that the bones are short and large, when you pull the spine out after cooking, all the other bones come with it.

That's how they served them to me in a N.C. restaurant. 1 lb'rs, dipped, fried, with greens, cornbread and sweet tea.
