best hat? i need a new one
« on: Dec 02, 2008, 05:53 AM »
whats the best hat you've ever had for ice fishing?
i had a wool stormy kromer for several years, i liked it alot, it was pretty good.
lately, i've been wearing a mad bomber. it's warmer than the stormy, but not very well made, the thing sheds fur like a an old german sheperd.
i've been looking online at beaver fur trooper hats. pretty expensive, but if they're sturdy, warm and comfortable, i could maybe find one under the tree this year.

so... whats yours?
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

I trap and had the hat to the left made of my own fur, I only wear it for special occasions. It's actually too warm.

I picked up the fleece Ice Armor hat for $10. It's got a windproof liner that should make it good for windy days.

I also have a real nice fur hat made from muskrat fur and that beauty is WARM! It's too nice of a hat to wear for ice fishing though so I prefer the baseball cap style with the flap that comes down all the way around and the fur type ear flaps. They're waterproof goretex outside, thinsulate insulated and about a dime a dozen.
Very warm.

Have a real Russian Navy (Bomber/Tropper style-Kind used in the movie Red-October) hat I picked up years ago when my ship stopped in Poland.
Made of Russian rabbit fur and lined with quilted insulation.
Very well made, and Warm and cost me only $11.00 US

Saw some recently being sold at a local Army-Navy surplus store here in Ct.
Good place to find all wool pants.
If bitter cold I also wear a balaclava to protect my face from Frostbite!

I have worn the Mad Bomber rabbit fur hat for at least 10 years now and it is still going strong. I will say that I got 2 new ones for my sons 2 years ago and they are just not as heavy duty as the one I have.

I hear that!  I bought mine about 15 years ago and bought a few last year at a close out and they are as warm, but terrible quality.

I have a leather Mad Bomber with rabbit fur and a pair mittens with rabbit fur on the outside. The Mad Bomber is about 10 years old and good quality. I'm guessing they weren't Chinese rabbits.   ;)

i wear either two or 3 stocking caps. Only thing that seems to keep my head warm.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

yep, thats just like the one i got a couple years ago, that's falling apart.
toasty warm, terrible quality.

thanks for all the good ideas.
i talked to a vendor on line about a coyote hat, and she said that they might not hold up to repeated wet weather, and recomended the beaver hat.-$255 bux though.
i guess mil surplus might be the way to go.

I have one as well, bought here in Yellowknife.
Warmest dang hat. I can't wear it when doing anything more active than walking or I sweat like a horse.
Wore it last year in wind chills to -70F and was toasty!!!!!

I have this as well and have been completely satisfied, but for pure style you can't beat a bomber hat.
