Which Shack are you using?
« on: Jan 12, 2012, 08:33 PM »
I have a Clam Denali IV that I am completely happy with.  I have never fished out of any other flip over shelter though.  I am looking at adding another shack to the fleet and wondering what you are all using.  Please post a picture or tell me/us what you have and why you like it, or what you dislike about it!!  I am only looking for Flip overs or hub style shacks, no permanants!

Shappell ice house 6000. its 6'x6', enough room to stand up, easy to set up/take down. folds up nicely into its bag. does not take up much room when transporting. does not weigh too much either.

I have an eskimo quickfish 3 that worked fine for several winters and last year I upgraded to an Eskimo Eskape 350. Love it. The bench seats with underseat storage are cool, as well as the built in table and all the room, full length of the sled built in rod holder placement, skylight and its quick and easy to set up for just on person.

Clam Yukon.  Third year with it but I wish I would have gone with a "beefier" sled style flip over.  It works fine but the poles are fairly weak for North Dakota winds and the fabric can't hold heat very well.  I have put reflex insulation in the top and it does help but if I had to do it over, I would pay more for a similar frabill or otter. I have fished out of the Frabill of the same size and it is a much better house imo. I use to have a quickfish 3 and I liked it a lot but it lacks mobility.

Love my Eskimos..we have spent 12 hr days, been in 40-50 mph high winds, they are tough and hold up. Easy to setup and warm. I use 8" 7/16" lag bolts w-washers, and a cordless 18 volt drill. I bring a hammer, tap them to start them, and screw them tight to the ice. They don't move. I live in Iowa, the wind blows all of the time and hard.

Otter Ice Lodge. Bought a third seat and fits 3 people nicely. It is quite heavy loading it into the back of a pickup with all your gear in the back! quite spacious inside. With three people it's kind of hard to find a good spot for the heater though

ASATMillerbluegill , I agree that the "pop up" style shelters will withstand crazy winds as long as you anchor them down correctly.  I fished out of my three man eskimo in ND winds for three years before I switched to my Yukon.  The Eskimo quckfishIII was better in the wind than my Yukon.  North Dakota has been called the Saudi Arabia of wind energy and I never had a problem with the pop up in the wind.  I had a problem with how easy it was to move.  I wish I didn't give my old hut away and I miss it in windy conditions.

I have the Fish Trap 2 and the Frabill Outpost. Hardly ever use them because we usually fish in a group and not enough room for everyone to sit.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

First time try with pictures.  This is my "Tinker" made 6x8 suitcase style.  Think I have about $100 into it, salvaged plywood and tent pole frame, garage sale canvas, bought the zippers, poly tarp, screws and a couple 2x4's.

fishing out of a medium size otter cabin for 13+ years.  Likes==> durable fabric, does not cut or tear as easy as some other shack.  I patch holes with silicone. I can load into my truck by myself, durable sled, plenty of room for two people.  Dislikes ==>did not come with seat so I purchased a one person seat.  Does not pull through slush very easy.  I have see other sleds pull easier.

I still have 5-10 years of life in this shack.  Would recommend Otter Cabins.

I have a Clam Base Camp, this is its third season. I have no problems with the wind. I use the lag bolts with washers and make sure to strap down the wind side. I just got a Frabill Commando. It's set up in my basement waiting for good ice. I think I am going to like it. I live in PA and have to drag everything so weight is a big concern.
