Portage lake walleye
« on: Dec 04, 2013, 05:01 PM »
Just looked at stocking reports on portage and since 2011 just under 6,000,000 walleye have been released from Chassell. A majority of which are fry. 1% survival rate, that's 60,000 survival. Any thoughts or input on this subject please speak your mind. I see nothing but a great walleye future for the portage and us guys who fish out there know that there are some very large walleye In there! Soon to be chasing them through the ice!

That's a lot of walleye. Who stocked them?  How did you predict survivorship?

Chase--I think all of last year's 13" - 14" walleyes are going to be fun.  However, I'm bound and determined to find those larger 15" perch too and now with all the planted walleye, that clock is ticking.

Mark--I sensed from a couple of your previous posts that you may be a biologist, yes?  If so, where?

The 1% survival is just what "they say" if you know what I mean. Over half of those were tribal plant. Since they spear from there...

Ha ha ha. You don't have to be a biologist to be educated.

No, but again, some of your past posts lead me to think that.  Am I wrong?

Chase--Not to cast dispersions but I would probably put a reality filter on some of that planting record information from what I've heard.

You're saying that not all of those numbers are true?

No I'm not. So don't believe anything I say. I just read enough to know when I am being chased by foolishness.  Good luck with the walleye though.

Mark--Just to be clear, my question actually had nothing to do with this thread insofar as it prompted my recollection of your contribution on a previous lake trout burping thread IIRC and it simply sparked my curiosity (I was an HR person in a previous life so it's in my nature) and that you did seem educated on that subject as well.

FWIW, I have no idea what typical walleye fry survival rates are, in the Portage or elsewhere.  I only know the Portage seemingly doesn't have much if any natural recruitment on its own but that it produces some nice fish once the fish are put into the system.  However, I've been told by those that do know that folks should be at least a little circumscript regarding some of the non-MI DNR planting numbers being reported.

A tribal plant done on 4/15/11 makes up for over half of the released population at 3,300,000. That's a large number to release at once. How true those numbers are I have no idea

This snow slowed us up as far as getting shacks out but I'm sure there is safe ice. Just a little messy. Yes bait shop is open still.

What is the condition of Chassell Bay this week, deep snow, slush? Sure wish the city would run that web cam that used to be located at boat launch. Tim V. you out there, get it fixed!

Not terrible slush. Couple inches. But the snow is a bit deeper. You could about run a wheeler though.

Took a wheeler out to the crappie grounds around the 23rd and it wasn't bad at all.  The humps had a ton of slush though.  So much snow around these parts!

This thread is awesome. If I still lived in Chassell I'd be yelling at some of ya's to STFU! That means you young Palo. Haha!

Oh not much meaning, just joking around. Funny to see a thread about my growing up stomping grounds. Hope you all have a great season slaying wallies, pike, perch, and crappie on Portage Lake!

In case anybody cares who doesn't already know, the slush is just about as bad out there right now as I've ever experienced (~1 ft slush + 6" snow in places). Just plain miserable without snowshoes off of the established trails.

Not so bad now. But I would still stick to using a sled, not a wheeler
