built a shanty, next part is heating. I am wondering if those catalytic heaters are actually safe like they say in the ad for use in an enclosed area such as a shanty? They are from Fleet Farm and run on a propane cylinder.

Doug the only safe one I've read about has been the Mr.
Heater-it has a low oxygen shut off system.I believe it's called the Buddy Heater and can run off 1 lb cylinders. Hope this helps, Doug

Doug, I have a catalytic heater and used last year and had no problems with low oxygen. I have a cabela's do it your self shanty and that heater is to small it will not heat it to the point that you are sweating but it will keep the extreme cold off and I have stayed in my shanty until the one pound bottle ran out. Hope this helps..

Doug,
I use a Mr Heater in plastic portables, but have found while using candles for lighting the holes at night that the candles start to flicker and burn low, indicating that the oxygen is getting down. Without a candle burning, such as during the day, a person might just think they're just getting tired.
I've talked to people who couldn't get their cigarette lighters to stay going long enough to light a smoke before they realized that their oxygen was almost gone. They're eally nice heaters, but a person needs to open the doors frequently, or just leave one zipped down enough to feel a breeze, especially if you have a plastic poratble that is banked with snow.

This is when a two doored porta shanti is nice, what I do is leave one door cracked open on the bottom and the other door open on the top a little. This creates a nice flow of fresh air through the shack even when the wind is not blowing.

Look up ZODI.com they make a heater that draws in fresh air and heats it in a heat exchanger then pipes the heated air where you want it. They are not cheap but they are very safe. I have a friend that uses one in his tent when deer hunting they dont get motels. Look them up then e-mail them they will send you a brochure.
Good Luck safe fishing

Heating a well sealed ice shack with a propane heater can be incredibly dangerous not because of low oxygen, but because of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide poisons the body in much the same way cyanide does. It bonds to red blood cells and doesn't let go for a long time. After a long enough exposure oxygen can't get in your system because the carbon monoxide has taken all the red blood cells, and thus you basically suffocate.
You need to keep the shack ventilated, or use a heater with a chimney to be safe, or buy a CO detector at Wal-Mart, it really could save your life.

Doug
I use these catalytic heaters on a daily basis in Canadian oilfield(Saskatchewan)They are perfectly safe, for the simple fact that their is no actual flame burning(without going into extreme detail and confusing people)yes there is no flame; therfor no oxygen is being used for a flame and no chimney is needed. I have used these heaters in the many ice shacks i have built and sold to locall guys and non of them are dead. Plain and simple they are safe. Besides most shacks are not sealed like a zip lock bag.One thing to think about is your size of shack to size of heater. 6x8 go 10000btu 8x16ft go 20000 to 30000 btu. That should have no problem keeping a shack warm. Hope this sets you at ease.

a few years back i built a ice shanty 5x6 1/2, i put a propane stove that is vented out the side, this works awesome! my frind did the same with a wood stove, look up propane stoves, mine cost around $70.
(they also work good for deer shanties)
-keep your stick on the ice!

fisher dan is quite wrong. just because you cant see a flame does not mean that there is some way around creating carbon monoxide when burning fuel. if you are using a portable ice shack, a stove and chimney may not be practical. a candle will only show if oxygen is low. take robb hanson's
advise, it could save your life---it will also give you
peace-of-mind ----i.e. am i tired or monoxide poisoned.

flag up

I have a 8x10 and I use a kerosene heater. People use them in extra bedrooms and for extra heat in houses. The smell is much, much less than propane, hardly noticable, and is realitivly cheap to heat. A gallon of kerosene will last 12 hours.

I purchased a Mr. Buddy heater from mills fleet farm and I've used it for 3 years now and it still works great. I've never had any problems with the ventilation. I run it off 1 pound clinders and it lasts for about 10 hours on medium heat. I think it's a good choice for shanties, stands, and blinds.

Mr buddy heaters are not vent free..they need a vent, and the tighter your place the more conscentrated the fumes. Remember, Carbon Monoxide is colorless and orderless and builds up over time. A direct vent heater is the best for permanent fish houses, with a small vent free second best.
I like the Eskabe Vent free heater, personally.

peavey mart has a coleman 1lb bottle heater that sells for 44.00 ( on sale). it is an electronic ignition and runs for about 13 hours per bottle.i have a portable shanty and have a ventilation hole in the top part of the wall.each bottle runs for about 3 to 4.00 but i have gotten them on sale for 2.00. this unit comes with a large handle and about a 1 foot round base which makes it very portable and light.i have found that it will keep the shack (40inch wide by 6 ft long by 6ft high)very comfortable.if you are worried about ventilation leave a portion of the shack close to a hole uncovered by snow and if there is any wind the draft will find the hold and keep ventilation running. too many poeple try for airtight conditions.i find i am always opening the door to see who is catching what and who is lying about a big one ...

The Mr. Buddy heater is a real nice heater, only weighs 7lbs and throws enough heat for a 250sqft. area, you can place the unit anywhere, even against the cloth cover on your portables because the back of it never gets hot. It also has its own igniter button so you dont need matches or lighters. I would definately recommend this heater to anyone.

I have used a propane stove in my shacks for 10 years now, and the heaters I use have got to be the safest I know of. When I go to spend 1-4 days at the Allagash "Condo" the last thing I am gonna bet my life on is watching a candle to see if there is enough air to breath, I am real surprized there is so many people out there trusting their and their friends lives to a candle,I'm surprized we haven't lost a bunch of them. The stoves I use are 16,000 btu direct vent propane stoves equipped with a thermo coupler incase the flame goes out, they cost $100. plus shipping. They are very cost efficiant to operate and to my knowledge and experiance are quite bullet proof. email me if you have any questions I'll be glad to help you. I just would like everyone to be safe and have fun doing it. LET THE FLAGS FLY!!!
