Sounds good to me, could we get an Omaha caravan going or something?  I'll post something about it on NEFGA after we set a date.

I'm sure, with a little advance notice, I could get my whole crew to go.  Power augers, shelters, and flashers galore.

Freds Baits here in Valentine has Minnows and Waxies, usually has suckers as well as smelt.  They are there everyday by 7 am I think and stay open till 10 pm.  They are a lot more reliable about being there and open.  They have also added quite a bit of ice fishing gear and jigs and stuff.  May not be what some places are like but their selection is the best Ive seen here in town in quite a while.

Fishing should be the exercise of your skills- and its rewards the places it brings you to

Thanks for all the info! After the new year works for me. As far as a Omaha caravan, I would be interested in meeting up and driving out together. Sounds like it will be a blast!!

I volunteer to Keep my ears open.  I dont fish the refuge or Merrit all that much, but I talk to several people who do.  Hopefully by the time we get a time line arranged for a get together  Ill have learned something usefull.  Im definately interested in getting together, doing some fishing, and meeting some new folks.

It would be cool having everyone out this way. 8)

Expected species iced with a sizable group.

Refuge Lakes; bass, bluegill, perch, pike. High probability of MA's in each species.

Merritt; crappie, bluegill, perch, walleye. Outside shot at cats, pike, musky, bass and white bass.

For those of you that have never fished these lakes, here are some things to think about.

My average ice fishing depth at Merritt is around 40 fow. Perch may run deeper. Have some line on your reels. Electronics are a must for pan fish and walleye. Quads and sleds are allowed on ice at Merritt. I could bring a couple of quads to help everyone get around.

Refuge Lakes are shallow and easily fished without electronics. Some lakes are clear enough to allow sight fishing.

We are fishing a qualifier ice tourney in MN Dec 31 - Jan 4. Other than that I'm available except during the Cork Thornton ice tourney Jan 25. If someone really wants to learn Merritt I would highly recommend fishing this event. Everyone gets a door prizes (some are very good) and the knowledge is worth the entry $$. Big fun is the bonus.

has anyone fished big alkali by the refuge.  only did once and caught 15.25" crappie and two 6 inch perch in about 5 hrs.  Traveled 2.5 hrs but crappie made it worth it. Would like to go back but would be nice to have a bit of advice.
