I think you may have nailed it pasquatch.  the only difference I noticed, which you can't see in the original pic is the fish almost looked transparent and you could see a black line, or it's spine running the length of the fish.

Couldn't have been a smelt because it lacks the adipose fin on the back. Want to say its an emerald, which in my neck of the pond they call Niagra's(I believe). Take one last look at the dorsal fin if there's a black blotch at the base towards the tail it may be a spotfin shiner, which are very common and resemble the emeralds.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was an emerald.  We can get them readily at bait shops and people could have thrown them in there.

Here in Wis. we'd call it an Emerald Shiner which is our favorite bait on tip ups for Pike in the winter and small Muskie in shallow water in the summer.
Good thing about prisons- they reduce the potential number of fisherman on the ice!

I know the difference between a smelt and an emerald, but I have Niagra's in the tank right now and they do look just like this emerald in the post and I thought, it was a local name for emeralds. There isin't any minnow or shiner or fish in general with the common name of Niagra in any of my books. The bait shop I worked at never sold emeralds, they called them Niagra's, so that's where my assumption comes from. I don't have a digital camera, anybody got a pic of a Niagara? I've heard of Buckeye's, but no one around me sell's anything called a buckeye, so I can't say on that one.

I am not sure as to what kind of fish you have, but I am sure it is not a smelt! First off it's missing at least two fins and the mouth is wrong. I have caught, cleaned and eaten a good deal of smelt. We use to dip net them after dark from tributaries of Lake Michigan during their spring spawning run. Then spend the next day cleaning them. Cleaning is quite simple but tedious, two snips with a scissors. One for the head, the second down the belly and a swipe of a finger all done. Next comes the beer batter and the deep fryer! Delicious!

I think the consensus is an Emerald Shiner.  Thanks everyone for helping solve the mysterious fish.   ;D  This may explain why the crappies in this lake have grown significantly from last year and green seems to be the best color.

It's definitely a bass, but I can't quite figure out if it's a largemouth or smallmouth?  Hmmm...let's see, DOES IT REALLY MATTER?!   :D ;)

unless you can't see it in the picture, a smelt has an adipose fin between the dorsal and tail like a trout. this one doesn't have one, so it can't be a smelt.

A few years back had a bunch of them in the shallows of my home lake. The bass ended up schooling them up and just picked them off til they were gone, but its just somebodys bait that grew up. THERES A REASON THEY TELL YOU NOT TO DUMP YOUR BAIT IN THE LAKE.
