If I am alone, I try to put my tip-ups in a circle around me, about 20-30 yards away from me/each other, in different depths.  Then if certain ones get hot, say shallow ones by the weeds are hitting, I will move the 'cold' ones.  If there are a bunch of us, we do them like:

Again, we try to vary the structure and depth to find what is hot, and adjust from there.

for tip ups i usallay make a staright line towards the shallow water and then which ever does the best after about 3 hours or so i switch it so in a striaght line iwth the one that did good.

me and d_balm24 were pike fishing last year and i found a hot spot, so he moved his tip-up 10 feet from mine. lol we still dont know who caught the pike the lines were so tangled up. so mine are always at least 20 feet apart unless im pan and perch fishing.

That reminds me.  We've had pickeral grab a minnow under a tip-up, and before we could get it, another flag pops up.  Ended up the same pickeral grabbed a second minnow, 20 yards from the one he just snagged.  This has happened on 2 occasions that I can remember.

I always drill in circles.  Walk out, drop the gear, drill a circle of holes.  When you're done drilling, you're back at your gear.  Set down the auger and fish the circle of holes and you're back at your gear again.  Drop everything back in the fish trap and move on.  Big circles over flat bottom, small over breaks.  Still haven't decided if I'm efficient, or just lazy  :P.

One place I Ice fish a lot I like to start off with a straight line of tip-ups, from 5 to a little over 20 Ft deep, if there are two of us sometimes do the set-ups parallel to eachother.   Lets you fid out what depth the fish are feeding at and move your tip-ups accordingly.     the straight line lets you scout the depths and structure easier.

      But say if Im in a shallow flat with one trough about 3 feet deeper then the rest of it, Ive been known to run the tip-up line following that trough, and usually seeing as its more then just me fishing we tend to spread out both sides of the trough.   
  That one tends to be more curved and not in a straight line somethign sort of liek this if we have enough people

     Always try to keep the tip-ups a fair distance away from the other ones, never had a tangle, but I was fishing a place once adn a guy came in and set his perch tip-ups, 3 of them within 15 feet of one of my piek tip-ups, if I had gotten a flag that day I would have easily taken out 3 of his tip-ups.      Plus if you keep them farther spread out you can work different depths and bottom structure a lot easier.     
     I guess a lot of how the tip-ups get set out depends on what the depth is and how the bottom looks.     
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.

v going shallow to deep.sometimes i put a third row up the middle. the middle row would be going through the middle of the pool,outer row for fish coming and leaving the pool.pool size will determine if this will work.

I usually take the GPS out and zig zag on the break line.  If I am fishing the weeds or in a bay, there is no pattern, it just depends on when I want to stop drilling and start fishing.

I think my hole placement varies everytime i go out.  It is based on many factors, weather, previous success at a location, intensity of hang-over, if my friend is there with his 4 wheeler.  Adjust them accordingly as the day progresses.

only alowed 5 traps. i,ll drill 3 in a straight line and 1 on both sides. if 1 trap does nothing, i,ll move it to another area. i usally drill extra holes for jigging also. pull the trap that has the less action and jig.

Two parellel, staggered lines, going across the feeding flat or off a ledge, looking for lakers. About 150' in between holes.

Its looks something like this. I jig in random spots around the area.
