met the parents for lunch today and was close by cabelas so i figured i'd pick up some waxworms only to be told they are all out and NOOne in Omaha has them.  I told the guy i'd just hit Scheels and he told me i was just wasting my time. Well i hit scheels anyway and what do you know, both fridges full of waxworms. 10 bucks a tub. What a joke, I WILL NOT GO THERE AGAIN!!!!!!!

I go to Cabela's when I need to buy something pretty for my wife, when I need outdoor gear I go to Scheels or BP ;D.

You're ranting about wax worms????? Go to the local pet store and buy your meal or wax worms. They're much cheaper and always in stock.

Pet stores are ridiculous when it comes to wax worms.  Online is cheaper than Scheels though.

I have been a Cabelas man all my life and I like to support Nebraska,s original businesses. Just going off of what you guys have all said I really hope that Cabelas is not turning into the "Walmart" of the sporting goods world.
If you never try you will never know!

Being someone who lives close to the Cabelas and works close to the BP in Council Bluffs, I have shopped at both stores for ice fishing gear this season (gear that I haven't used much, but that's for a different post).  This is my first season ice fishing "on my own," not tagging along with others, so I hadn't shopped for ice gear before.  In general, prices were comparable on most items, but the biggest difference in my mind was that BP had at least double the selection and a lot more product in stock than Cabelas did at any point.  You could say that Cabelas is the smarter store and saw the "season" coming for what it was, but my preference for ice gear shopping is currently with BP as far as brick-and-mortar "superstores" go.

I too hate it when I go someplace and they don't have what I am looking for. You have to remember though, the Cabelas in LaVista is about 1/2 the size of their normal store. They only put that there as a courtesy to sportsmen in the local area. That store doesn't make any money for them. I was there a couple of weeks ago and they had plenty of wax worms and minnows. Maybe you who went at the last minute should have thought ahead and bought before. One tub will usually last the entire season and they are easy to keep alive. I know that it is frustrating shopping there sometimes but the customer service is great. I just know that the selection will be limited and they wont always have what I am looking for. I have been to some of the larger stores so I know it is impossible to make everyone happy with a store half the size. Remember if you plan ahead you can always order online or out of the catalog and they ship it free to the store for pick up. I have had to do that with many items but I am ok with that. Have a good day!

The Wal Mart comment pretty much nails it! They've gone corporate and lost respect for the people! If they focused half their attention on the product than they do on pushing cabelas cards at the front door, they would do ok.  If we all bought only online they would have no reason for a store. Some of you may plan a season, with my ADD it's impossible! 90% of the times I hit the stores, is on a boring gloomy day. Friends and I jump in the car and go impulse shop. I buy most my ice gear just browsing, therefore with cabelas small selection they don't sell me much. I feel the store is for the novice sportsman and his family. If someone is serious about ice gear, go to scheels!

If you know how to hit the sales and are smart enough to shop before and after the season in which you will be buying sporting goods for, then Cabelas is awesome.  Bass Pro and Shcheels are great too.  I have hundreds of unopened Terminator T-1 spinnerbaits in my garage because I only buy em when they are 2 bucks a piece, BPS and Cabelas has both had them at that price.  I've got tons of ice jigs and spoons that are less than 1/4 of the price that any store wants for em right now, and all of them came from Cabelas.  I've got four $160.00 reels from Cabelas that I paid about 40 bucks a piece for.  I go through about 6 gallons of boat oil a year and I buy all of it in April when Cabelas has it for $10.00 a gallon.  One of my Marcum LX3tc's came from the Bargain Cave at Cabelas in brand new condition for $200.00.  I also have a Clam Ice Armor suit and Frabill ice suit that cost nearly $800.00 brand new put together and I paid less than 350.00 for both of them.  Just got a new waterfowl coat and pants that retailed at over $400.00 together for less than $120.00.  Cabelas also puts all of there Rapalas at 25% off every spring.  And I've never once had a bad experience at Cabelas.  I also don't need people waiting on me hand and foot either.  Usually I do my research before I go to the store, that way I am in and out if I want to be.  I've even called ahead to check to see if they have stuff I am looking for, it's really not that difficult to pick up the phone, believe it or not, its easier than driving all the way to the store.  I rarely ever buy anything at full price, and I am out there browsing a lot.  If I know I can wait and get a better deal later in the year, I'll just wait.  If it is so bad, then why is the store packed nearly every time I am in there?  The reason the return policy has changed is because customers were buying thousands of dollars worth of gear, going on a once in a lifetime hunting trip and then coming back and returning all of the goods, I think I'd change my policy too if people were doing that to me.  It's not Cabelas' fault, seems once again a few dumba**** ruined it for everyone.

Yeah what Chuck said.  No need to say all the negative comment's.  They are a successful Nebraska company that is responsible for allot of employment full time and seasonal.  They are a real asset to the state in many ways.  Every store has its strong points and weakness's.  It would be better if they all could have some of there clothing and other products American made.  It would be allot of jobs considering the amount of merchandise they sell.

@ Tritz

I don't know why it is so shocking to you. I know for a fact that store doesn't make a profit. How do I know? Well my mom was a land development specialist for them for 10 years. She worked there when they built that store. With the cost of the land, building cost and overhead it is a loss for them. The reason they built it was to appease Nebraskans in the eastern part of the state. Like I said, I have went there only to find out that they didn't have what I wanted but I am realistic and know that they can't always have what everyone wants. I am a more avid bass fisherman and I will order online or go to Bass Pro when I need lures that are not common to the average fisherman. No business can make everyone happy but as far as not having wax worms at a given time is no ones fault but the person who decided to wait till the last minute to buy them!

As busy as they are I still don't believe they're losing money. But if they are as you say, I'm even happier I'm not an investor or hold stocks with their way of thinking.

I thought Cabela's built it after they woke up one day and Bass Pro was going in across the river.

I have been gone for 3 days and come back and this thing is still here. I can't believe a bunch of grown men can sit there a pi$$ and moan about something like this as long as this has went on, if you don't like shopping there don't go there, no one is holding a gun to your head, besides this is the Nebraska Ice Forum, not the Nebraska Pi$$ing and Moaning Forum.

I agree, Hank. It must be the withdrawal symtoms from the lack of ice this winter bringing out the worst in everyone.
If Cabela's ever decides to close down there, we would welcome them with open arms in Broken Bow. That would only be 100 miles travel for me, cutting my travel time almost in half to the next closest one. @)
